Ep. 5410 – Danny Sjursen on the Post-Military Jobs of his Afghan Commanders – 11/11/2020
Scott interviews Danny Sjursen about where his former commanders from Afghanistan have ended up in the years since the surge. Sjursen goes through a handful of these men: almost without fail, his former generals have ended up with profitable jobs in the arms industry or at hawkish think tanks, and his colonels have been promoted to take the place of those retired generals—and will surely join them in the private sector soon enough. The fact that none of this surprises us should be a reminder of just how corrupt America’s military-industrial complex is. A path to a six- or seven-figure salary in the defense industry is virtually guaranteed for any senior military officer after retirement. On a more positive note, Scott and Sjursen discuss President Trump’s recent appointment of Colonel Macgregor to the Pentagon, a move that may signal his intent to push troop withdrawals during what may be his final months in office.
Eric Garris, founder and director of Antiwar.com, discusses Justin Raimondo’s column “The FBI vs. Antiwar.com” about FOIA documents detailing a 2004 FBI investigation of Antiwar.com, its staff and particularly Raimondo himself; the FBI’s apparent interest in “Urban Movers” and the Israeli connection to 9/11; how the FBI got a FISA warrant to essentially conduct a counterterrorism investigation against Antiwar.com, a US-based non-profit media outlet; holding our collective breath until the un-redacted document is released in 2035; and how to keep charitable donations – large and small – anonymous.

Frank Dorrel, publisher and distributor of the antiwar comic book Addicted to War, discusses how he turned to antiwar activism after serving in the US Air Force during Vietnam; his film "What I've Learned About U.S. Foreign Policy: The War Against The Third World;" how activist education helps Americans wake up to the destructive nature of their government; and why many Americans self-identify through a "civic religion" of indoctrinated nationalism.

Kelley B. Vlahos, featured Antiwar.com columnist and contributing editor for The American Conservative magazine, discusses the periodic, ritualistic exercise of claiming progress in the Afghanistan War, wherein US generals tell bland lies to Congress and nobody asks follow-up questions; the 300,000+ member Afghan army that is always right around the corner from competency; the end of patriotic breast-beating pro-war fervor in the military and government; and why congressional staffers would more ably question the war effort than the stuffed shirt Representatives who just want camera face-time.

Steve Connors and Molly Bingham discuss their movie "Meeting Resistance" about the Sunni occupation resistance, how Saddam Hussein's capture freed more Iraqis to fight against the Americans, the psych-ops aimed at America framing the insurgents as social outcasts instead of the normal citizens they are, the complex interplay between the Iraqi, Iranian and American factions in Iraq, the similarity in the way the West and Islamic traditions venerate war dead and the difficulty they had in getting the film made.

Gareth Porter explains why the claim that the Russian government “hacked all 50 U.S. states” is false—namely, the states themselves know that their systems were intact! The narrative has nonetheless been pushed continuously, as democrats try to justify Hillary Clinton’s 2016 loss by any means necessary.
