Baselining Session HTTP Transfer
Heres another slide from the Baselining session I had the other day.
This time we were looking at application behavior. The point of this slide is not to get initially caught up with what could be causing the behavior, or if its bad or good.
In this specific example, I used wget to see if an HTTP transfer behaved the same way as when the application performed the same HTTP GET.
I kept every as consistent as possible:
• Same source IP
• Same destination IP
• Same version of HTTP (1.1)
• Same URL
• Same approx. time of the day (5 minutes apart)
During a real baseline I would want to get multiple traces/tests (5 if possible) to definitively prove if this is indeed a real pattern.
After proving the pattern is consistent, you can make an observation, possible recommendations and then remeasure to see if it helped.

One of the most difficult topics to tackle is correlating performance with WiFi statistics.
The easiest way to learn or get a grasp of your RF/WiFi environment is to measure its performance.

There have been more than a few times where I had to illustrate that ARP was an issue.
When a suspected ARP issue, or you just need to understand how often a device ARP’s, or you need a good challenge when using your favorite packet analyzer, this is a great exercise.
There are 2 basic goals to this video:
1. Always learn how to configure your tools for the task at hand. In this specific example I turn off my colors, disable my bytes view and configure my time format.
2. Protocol analysis is largely an exercise in pattern recognition, using the correct display and filters allow you to see that pattern. Even if you are just learning, this is a great way to figure things out.

When troubleshooting performance issues most analysts find themselves chasing one of two issues; latency or retransmissions. Both scenarios result in performance degradation but have different root causes and solutions.
In this video I cover how the same problem can look like a latency or a retransmission related issue simply by changing your location in the network. I’ve been involved in many troubleshooting exercises where I get a totally different perspective by changing my test point.
Here are some additional tips when trying to identify if the issue is latency or retransmission related:
• Try to monitor from the senders perspective. If the sender is not physically close, then make yourself the sender by uploading a file or running iperf.
• Pay attention to your protocols. This article and video is helpful when dealing with TCP base protocols. UDP is a totally different animal.
• Try to leverage operating system commands like netstat –s to identify retransmissions.
• Understand what your tools are reporting. For example Wireshark might note a Retransmission, Spurious Retransmission, Fast Retransmission as well as other notes.
• Look for TCP specific hints like Selective Right Edge (SRE) or Selective Left Edge (SLE) to possibly indicate packet loss.
There is no guaranteed tip or trick when troubleshooting packet loss or latency issues but I hope this article and video will help you when troubleshooting.

One of the biggest mistakes I see out there when I observe analysts conducting performance tests is that they get paralyzed with way too much detail. Then they feel so overwhelmed that they don’t test.
I say ‘Just start measuring’. If you see an anomaly or something out of place, then start digging in and documenting. For example, if I thought my Wifi performance was terrible, I would look into my WiFi details and access point configuration like channel selection, channel width, etc..
I would say that about 75% of the time clients do not have a baseline, trace files or current documentation.
In this example I am comparing iPerf3 on various devices and network topologies to illustrate that the results will always be different.
