Right now, I know that most Pentium 4-era computers and newer are still alive and kicking. For instance, I remember in middle school how all the computers, which had a Core 2 Duo, was SO much more usable than my laptop at the time, which was much newer but ran an ... *shivers* ... Intel Celeron. I even saw one or two computers with a Pentium 4 HT in them, and I was really jealous of just how usable those computers were. However, there was one video by OzTalksHW here (https://inv.riverside.rocks/watch?v=c_g_QItzVWM), where he tried to browse the internet from a 2001 computer. It was actually kind of shocking, not just because it was fast enough to run Reddit (the bloated garbage fire that it is), but also because Windows XP, which was in this computer, really was from a different era. It was at its prime when tech services like Google and Youtube were still quite small, and that people hadn't seen the horrors that mainstream social media wouldn't have brought onto the world. Even in ~2014 when it was last relevant, it was still quite too early for alternative platforms to even be a thought in peoples' minds. Unless you count Dailymotion or Google+, which are joke services, there wasn't anything, it took until the release of Mastodon for the Fediverse to become viable, and blockchain-based services (cryptocurrency, LBRY) were in their very early stages. So, it's just really weird to see him use this computer for the modern day, when it was designed for a completely different internet. Maybe if he put a lightweight Linux distro on there, maybe it wouldn't feel so different. There are many lightweight distros that look completely contemporary on XFCE, a desktop intended for old machines, such as Manjaro. Anyways, I just thought about it since many people are now realizing how important reusability is for reducing environmental waste, and the fact that old machines are still usable today makes that completely possible. Also, here are the finalized names for these three cute robo-pals! The blue retro cat is Qompac, a pun based on a legacy computer brand, Kipper, just because it reflects his chihuahua-like aggression, and Solaris, based on an the open-source OS of the same name. Maybe I'll even add more characters, such as Dora, or shorthand for Fedora Linux and embarrassed of his name (for obvious reasons), or Mint, based on Linux Mint and a granny who just gets business done. "What, Earth? Your people sing the same song and it's totally fine." Have you heard of Polandballs? They're basically spheres decorated as a country's flag and eyes, and act as a country's stereotypical behaviors. It's one of the most cute and playful ways to make jokes about history and geopolitics since they're cute abstract balls (Fun exceptions: Kazakhstan the rectangle, R E I C H T A N G L E, Venice the octopus, and Nepal the bitey boy), so it lightens the tension in what are otherwise very serious situations. I've also seen them used in serious video essays such as with the videos from Kraut or CallMeEzekiel (both on Odysee, btw), and they're also engaging. What I'm doing in this artpiece is a derivative style called Planetballs, which instead talk about astronomy, and as someone who loves space and the cosmos, I also find these jokes hilarious. They can be expressed in less fun ways, though, where artists want to force a political statement which ruins the joke, for example. I really get annoyed when that happens, since it's usually just overdone talking points like one-dimensional USA-bashing (when I'd say Europe isn't much better outside of food or urban planning). These jokes are a minority of what you can find with Polandball posts, though, and you'd have a nice time exploring other works related to it. Overall, it's fun to see that the internet as a community instead of one single person has made an artstyle that fits so well with expressing history and geopolitics.
