Why Walt Disney Stock is Down So Much | Should You Buy Walt Disney Stock
Disney's stock (ticket symbol: DIS) is down about 50% from its all time high. What explains the dramatic drop in Disney's stock price?
Disney theme parks are suffering from quite a number of problems recently:
For one thing, the theme parks have become so expensive that a lot of people have stopped going to the Disney theme park. Some of the magic seems to have ended at the park recently. When I was at the Disneyland theme park, I felt like something was missing that I used to enjoy. Everywhere you go, there is an extra charge – Genie, Lightening, etc, etc. I am not against Disney creating VIP packages – after all, the people who are paying a whole lot more make things more affordable for everyone else. At the same time, it just seems like a lot of people feel like they are not quite getting what they are paying for.
Disney has also been making quite a number of films that have not done well at the box office. The sad thing about Disney is while they seem to take their theme park guests for granted – almost cash cows, they are almost willing to make films that people don't want to see and are not willing to pay for. It would make a lot more sense if Disney started concentrating on a lot fewer, higher quality films that are almost guaranteed to make quite a lot of money. Recently, I saw the woman who is going to play the new Snow White being interviewed – and she criticized the original Snow White, despite the fact that Snow White is what brought enough profits to buy the Walt Disney studios in Burbank.
Disney's stock did fairly well during the pandemic because the Walt Disney World park was opened early in Florida and there were quite a number of people signing up for Disney+ since they were spending quite a lot of time at home. Over time, though, eventually people started going out again, and they probably didn't think Disney+ was such a good value. Plus, the price increases on Disney+ are enormous. The other problem with Disney+ is that Walt Disney seems to think that volume matters more than quality. They are willing to churn out quite a number of low quality TV shows and with politically polarizing content, and that isn't helpful.
Disney also needs to become politically neutral. There is no reason for Disney to launce into culture wars. They are there to make money. It is not the job of Disney to run the schools in Florida. No one elected Disney to anything. Their job is to entertain, and if they do that well, they – and their shareholdres – will do well.

Wynn Las Vegas has been a stock that has been struggling this year because not many people are interested in traveling to Las Vegas and going there for fun.
