Remembering director Richard (Dick) Donner (April 30, 1930 - July 5, 2021) , an inspiration, an innovator, a teacher, a big kid with a big heart. We talked about many things when I visited him at his home back in 2001....my "Time Machine" remake, George Pal, other projects he was planning. I expressed how much his works meant to me. I brought up "The Twilight Zone", "The Omen", "Lethal Weapon", "The Goonies". The list is long. But it was this scene I told him - the farewell between Ma Kent and Young Kent from "Superman" - that so deeply moved me. The expansive wheat field, the close-up of Phyllis Thaxter, the boom shot, the tenderness between mother and son. All so resonant, so expertly executed. One of the great cinematic moments. Dick was very kind, very appreciative as I know he was paid many compliments over the years. Whenever I revisit the film, I think of him and this scene. The emotion is so palpable, so heartbreaking. The impact has not diminished over the years aided in no small measure by John Williams powerful score.

Enjoy this rare recording session with Paul Frees the "Ghost Host" for "The Haunted Mansion". It was an honor working with "The Man of a Thousand Voices" on "The Puppetoon Movie" and "The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal", Paul's last two projects. Paul was perhaps the most versatile voice talents in movie history. He was first an actor, impressionist, comedian, screenwriter who worked for Walt Disney, George Pal, Walter Lantz, Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Paramount Pictures, Hanna-Barbera, Filmation, UPA, DePatie-Freleng, Jay Ward Productions, Rankin/Bass and many others. Paul did countless movies, animation projects, Disney's
"Pirates of the Caribbean", "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln", Ludwig Von Drake, Boris Badenov ("Rocky & Bullwinkle"), the Pillsbury Doughboy and many more. I remember Paul most as the voice of the 'Talking Rings' in "The Time Machine" (1960) and narrator and star in "The War of the Worlds" (1953) both for George Pal.

20th Century-Fox CinemaScope Opening (1954) from "River of No Return". Notable, as it was the very first Fox feature to introduce composer Alfred Newman's EXTENDED musical "Fanfare" for "A CinemaScope Production". CinemaScope was first introduced on the Fox feature "The Robe" (1953) but without the now memorable Newman signature fanfare music.
