Finishing up my double-A4 page of Tiger drawings.
I'm thoroughly enjoying sketching these at the moment, I might have to paint a Tiger with my own character at some point.

Gouache Painting Tip! ?
A very similar technique to dry brushing using an actual paint brush, is to use your fingers and thumb.
You just need to apply the paint on the canvas using the brush first (not too much), and then use your thumb or fingers to scrape/push/drag the paint in a certain direction.
You don’t get the bristle effect that comes with the brush, but you can still get a nice texture/quality of stroke, and often you have more control.
I tend to mix up actual brush dry brushing with this technique when working on a painting.
This is a work-in-progress gouache painting of a waterfall.

Achieving a painterly effect for digital painting can be a challenge. It does help if the artist already has knowledge, practice and skill in traditional painting media. However, a digital artist can still observe and imitate the painterly effects of an oil or acrylic painting on canvas with only practice of digital tools such as Photoshop.
In this quick digital art tutorial I'm going to share with you a simple technique with a tool in Photoshop which enables you to make more painterly brush strokes with ease on the digital canvas.

This is a time-lapse video of my pencil drawing study of the original work created by John Singer Sargent, one of my favourite artist's.
John Singer Sargent was an American expatriate artist who was born in Florence, Italy and who later died in London, England.
Sargent made his name as a realist portrait painter, and was considered one of the best of his time around the world. But he also painted in a impressionist/abstract style, having studied from Monet.
To me it seemed like Sargent was able to fuse some realism and impressionism together with his paintings. From a distance his work looks highly realistic, but as you get closer, you can see the abstract, broad brush strokes which makes you question what you are actually looking at. To me he was a master of colour and light, and also edge work. One of the best draftsmen and painters.
John Singer Sargent is one of the artist's who I will continue to study. I might do some colour master study paintings of his too. And also some of the work of his friend, Sorolla!
