Guy breaks down in tears after hearing me play guitar - Maybe there's still hope for mankind?
I get approached a lot after playing, but for someone to break down in tears after hearing me play, that never happens. Busking and youtube facts:
1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking, is banned. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and had a serious brain aneyruism in April 2021. Still recovering from that.
3) I make ZERO from youtube no matter how many views I get. I was demonetized by Google years ago as part of their culling of small accounts. I don't run ads. And more importantly, even if I did, most of my videos are instantly copyrighted and auto monetized by record labels because they are COVERS. If you see an ad, it's the record label collecting. i meet all types: drunks, drug addicts, the apathetic zombies with their phones, power tripping noise bylaw workers, but aggressive buskers who play over me while I’m still playing? That’s a new one. Especially impressive coming from a non visa immigrant from Italy. If he's new in town and acts like this, imagine what happens after a year. Scary. How desperate do you have to be to do something like this. And I wasn't the only one who got annoyed. Lots of people complained about how loud this guy was, including my regular viewers, passerby, as well as security in the building.
I was told that this is common aggressive behavior for Italian buskers, who like to fight like hyenas for spots. In 5 years on the streets I’ve never met another busker with absolutely zero social skills. They are 99% of the time, very friendly and supportive.
Watch Kenny G at 13:50 tell me my time is up. He proceeds to set up his rig 20 feet away and start playing. Never seen anything like it. I can understand because this is the only 30 foot span of sidewalk in the entire city with public access. Vancouver only started making sidewalks in 2019, and one day we hope to have enough room that impatient buskers can actually set up on a different sidewalk that isn't being used.
I muted his vocal noise because I don’t want the music ruined. Luckily, his elevator music bleating wasn’t picked up by my amp recorder.

I'm playing 'Breathe'. Watch the street beggar get tipped at 1:00. He did better than me. This was a very common occurrence. I could be playing for an hour straight, not make a dime, and the people sitting on their asses all around me would make more money. All part of the downfall of civilization. This was a part of the reason I gave up busking. People did not care about live music.

2) I'm unemployed. I lost all busking work 2020 (it was banned) and received zero compensation. I had a very bad year and then had a serious brain aneurism in April 2021. I will never busk again as the stress from 5 years of busking very likely caused my aneurism.
3) I make ZERO from YouTube no matter how many views I get. I had 5 million views in June. Didn't make a dime. I am demonetized. I can't run ads, even on original content. It's just hilarious to me as I go through my old busking videos and watch the complete apathy of the public. Notice I am not playing avant garde jazz or Frank Zappa, Himalayan chants or anything that is hard on a musical leve to understand. I play a latin style jam that is basically every song in Santana's entire history, and no one gives a damn. Just proves that playing what is popular or 'commonly accepted or enjoyed' is not a ticket to getting tips. I went through this a lot on my last day busking, which was this day, and the apathy was so great I haven't even been able to pick up the guitar in 9 months.

I don't usually play the Art Gallery area. But today (July 31/22) my waterfront spot was occupied, so I gave it a shot. After I was shut down in the first 8 minutes of playing by the Ken/Karen woke patrol and told to move to the garbage cans, I managed to play 90 minutes before getting hassled a second time by an illegal t shirt vendor who said my time was up, and I was interfering with his obscenity filled rap 'music' blaring through the square at 5 year olds. I set him straight on a few things. Watch until the end. I won't be going back to the art gallery spot again. It's more relaxing to be surrounded by drug addicts, drunks, and mentally ill at my usual waterfront location.

My favorite pedal is the ehx pog 2, because it produces lovely volume swells which take the edge off a brittle lead, and gives a more violin like effect. Great for mellow jams.

A new low in tips. I've gotten bananas, half eaten cookies, blankets, pot, church texts, wooden feathers, foreign coins, smokes, but never this one before. This guy would not shut up for a half hour. Completely oblivious to the fact I was ignoring him and trying to play. Like many on this street, he's on drugs and can't keep his pants on.
