What makes violin to meet professional criteria? Badiarov Violins - stringing a new instrument
Hey friends! How are you?
I just wanted to ponder on this "complex" subject: What makes a violin meet professional criteria?
(I know it's too much for Wednesday evening, but anyway... )
So, what is it? Quality of sound?
Unfortunately it is not enough.
And I want to share my point of view...
When you are a pro with an incredibly busy schedule, a concert or two a day, bus trip and a flight and... yeah, by the way, you've also got to bring your kids to and from the kindergarten or a school, prepare food, do laundry and shopping, give a lesson, find time for your spouse, and still engage in a few other backstage activities... and, wait a moment, you still have to practice....
You just DO NOT HAVE THE TIME to practice and keep yourself in your best possible shape.
And since you do not have that time, you get all the stress and pressure that comes attached with it and you have to sacrifice your weekends and holidays, your family time, your health, because you have to practice those 7 new symphonies for the next season... (and sometimes those are the kind of symphonies that you are wondering why they are called "music" at all... )
Being a professional musician is ways harder than being a professional in any other field...
Professional musicians are super-heroes, nobody recognises as such... (That's my personal impression anyway, from the time when I was performing professionally)
And here is what I learned about instruments then:
That's when a correctly proportioned instrument, robustly built, that carries in the hall (and does not sound too loud under the ear) comes in handy.
An instrument where the right notes find your fingers by themselves...
An instrument when there is so much resonance, that it covers your bow changes and all the "oops" in your fingering technique...
An instrument that has so much overtones that it blends with no matter what without extra effort (and without section rehearsals).
An instrument that just works.
When you get an instrument like that it's like you get a second life, and all of a sudden LOTS of extra time to do other things.
That's exactly how I ethically stole lots of time from my professional career as a musician to build a professional career as a violin-maker.
I look forward to hearing from you what makes a professional instrument for you. You might have different ideas and I would LOVE to learn.
