What does it mean to believe in Jesus? It means being a disciple of Jesus Christ, engaging in interactive faith in Him, together with others. It's not just going to church on Sundays. This is the only way we can experience true salvation, from first to last.
Reasons for Spiritual Dryness | By Pastor Bong Baylon | RLCC
Date: Nov 23, 2022
Text: Luke 18:9-17
We must pay attention to the quality of our experience with God especially when we draw near to Him in prayer. Normally, we should experience consolation, not desolation, when we are in God's presence. But when there is spiritual dryness, we must examine the reasons.

Why is our relationship with God so dry sometimes?
Two Reasons
1. We approach God with a prideful heart (vv.9-14).
2. We approach God with a controlling heart (vv.15-17).
Central Idea: “God blesses those who are humble.” (“Pinagpapala ng Diyos ang mga mababa ang loob.”)

1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means... 19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” 21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.” (Luke 8:1-3,19-21)
We all have a need to belong. God knows this. That's why He created the family of Jesus so that together we can belong to Him and to one another. However, some people do not understand this. They think that being a Christian is just a personal decision. We don't need to think about others. We can have a relationship with Jesus all by ourselves. But this is contrary to the vision of Jesus for His church. We are called to be His family.

Main Idea: “Together we are called to belong to the family of Jesus.” (“Sama-sama tayong tinawag para mapabilang sa pamilya ni Jesus.”)
What does it mean to belong to the family of Jesus?
Three Essentials
1. We follow Jesus together (vv.1-2).
2. We serve Jesus together (v.3).
3. We obey Jesus together (vv.19-21).

Right Expectations | By Pastor Bong Baylon | RLCC
24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written: “‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ 28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.) (Luke 7:24-30)
Whenever we place ourselves in a situation where we can encounter God's message, it's important to have the right expectations. Sometimes people don't expect anything, so they don't get anything out of the experience. Others expect wrongly, so they do not get what they expect. But with the right expectations, our encounter with God's message can be life-transforming.

When we’re not motivated or concentrated, everything seems to be two and even three times harder. We need to understand demotivation and how to overcome it. There are three main causes of demotivation and we can find in the Book of Psalms at least three passages that can help us overcome each of them.

God's Unchanging Character | By Pastor Bong Baylon | RLCC
1 In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. 2 I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. 3 No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause. 4 Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. 6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. 7 Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good. 8 Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. 9 He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. 10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant. 11 For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great. 12 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord? He will instruct them in the ways they should choose. 13 They will spend their days in prosperity, and their descendants will inherit the land. 14 The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. 15 My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare. 16 Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. 17 Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish. 18 Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins. 19 See how numerous are my enemies and how fiercely they hate me! 20 Guard my life and rescue me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. 21 May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord, is in you. 22 Deliver Israel, O God, from all their troubles! (Psalm 25:1-22)
Once you surrender your life to God, you want to live according to His ways. You want to pursue righteousness. You don't want to sin anymore. But try as hard as we can, we still sin. When that happens, we feel ashamed of ourselves. Our enemy, Satan, who is the accuser of God's people, will try to convince us to hide or to withdraw. He will remind us that we are not worthy to be part of God's people anymore. But this is not the way of the Spirit.

We need to learn how to respond well to those so-called "thorns" in our lives. Instead of being mad, sad, or feeling bad about ourselves, we need to be glad. Let's respond positively rather than negatively.

Salvation is not just about the past. It is also about the future. The early church proclaimed the good news that Jesus will come back to restore all things and to bring about a new heaven and new earth. This motivated the early church to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives (Titus 2:12-13). In the same way, we are to be motivated to persevere because Jesus is coming back!

Life is full of hardship, sorrow, and pain. Some people drown in despair because of that while others try to alleviate the situation by escaping or denying the situation. The former leads to a loss of hope while the latter leads to an unhealthy attachment to pleasure. Is there another solution? Yes, it's called the discipline of celebration.
The discipline of celebration is one of the key disciplines of engagement (i.e., disciplines that we do with other people) that we can learn to practice in the midst of all the sorrow and pain in the world. It is the intentional enjoyment of our life with God by faith together with others. It must be balanced with other spiritual disciplines, especially disciplines of abstinence. Let us learn how we can practice this discipline in our lives.
