The future is rushing towards us as nations and companies rapidly develop the capabilities that will allow humanity to expand into space. Starships are being built and tested, and the colonization of the solar system may soon be at hand. But what type of society will develop in the cold isolation of Mars? Should we not consider what type of government these colonies will have and start planning to establish a framework now? While colonies on the Moon will almost certainly remain under full Earth governmental control, with limited independence for a long time, Mars is a different story… Mars is far enough from Earth that a high level of independence will be necessary for colonies to succeed. Elon Musk and others have that they would like to see a system of direct democracy.
