Georg Lukacs and Ernst Bloch debated the relative merits of Expressionism as against Socialist Realism in 1938 as Hitler was taking Czechoslovakia and Austria. Today we debate Dave Chappelle comedy specials and comic book movies as capitalism sets up multiple crises including right-wing populist movements, climate change disasters, and perpetual proxy wars. Should we move beyond cultural concerns or are we in desperate need of a new class consciousness?
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.
In this interview, Kenny Novis speaks with the historian Aaron Leonard about his latest book, Whole World in an Uproar: Music, Rebellion and Repression 1955-1972. This book deals with the radical history of American folk music during the cold war, as well as the ways in which radical folk singers were repressed by various institutions, including not only the FBI, but also the press and radio. In their discussion, Kenny and Aaron review some of the key themes of the book, including how the nature of political music shifted across the 40s-50s, the place of famous musicians in the resistance to the Vietnam war (including Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Phil Ochs, and more), and the broader relation between art and revolutionary politics.

Landon Frim and Harrison Fluss are joined by interviewer Daniel Tutt to discuss how philosophers are thinking the ecological crisis. Fluss and Frim argue the two dominant strains of thinking ecology today, Accelerationism and Gaian philosophies are ultimately inadequate frameworks because they reject the human frame as grounding politics; each seeks to subordinate the human in favor of a wholly alien other, either in the form of an anarchic nature or a dynamic technology. To transcend this strange coincidence of opposites, Fluss and Frim make the positive case for a Marxist humanism that is rationalist without being anthropocentric. This conversation is centered around their new book Prometheus and Gaia: Technology, Ecology and Anti-Humanism.

This is part one of a two part series of videos that will return to some of the ideas that were in our recent video on postmodernism, only this time we’ll step back from the 70s and into the 19th and the first half of the 20th century to do so. These videos will ask the philosophical questions “what is it to be human” or “what is it to be a self or a subject” only instead of arguing with Derrida while referring to Bojack Horseman and The Good Place, we’ll take on Max Stirner and Martin Heidegger while referencing Nicholas Ray’s 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause and video games.

On this episode of Convergences Adam from Acid Horizon is joined by Palestine Action activist and researcher Kieron Turner to discuss the work of Cedric Robinson and his landmark 1983 work Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition. We’re going to be covering Robinson’s life and work, his dialectical analysis of the historical and ideological phenomenon of Racial Capitalism, his critique of Marxist Historiography, and the life and history of the Black Radical Tradition. Also discussed is Robinson’s critique of the Eurocentric biases of certain Western Radicalisms, the critique of nationalist ideology, and his exposition of the Black Radical Tradition as the articulation of consciousness as a material force. That is, an emancipatory force of analysis, consciousness, and culture, as generated through the world historical experience and resistance of African peoples. Finally, we discuss the work of Palestine Action, which includes their ongoing campaign against the arms manufacturer Elbit Systems, which recently resulted in a weapons factory being shut down in Oldham, England. Kieron explains how Cedric Robinson’s thought has impacted his own work in theory and praxis, and how Robinson’s thought helps to orientate theory towards mass movements.

On this episode of Convergences: Jon, Kyle and Adam are joined by Liberation Theologian and Video Essayist Damon Garcia to talk about his new book 'The God Who Riots: Taking Back the Radical Jesus'. Damon takes us through the history of liberation theology arising from the class struggles in South America in the mid 20th century, detailing the intersections between dissident elements in the church and Marxist revolutionary militants in places such as Nicaragua, Brazil, and Cuba. We discussed the commonalities between socialist and Christian thought, how to read Jesus as a political tactician and organizer against the Roman Empire, the challenges that radical religion faces from its own institutions, and the lines of escape that lie in wait for a Christianity that rises up from below.

We'll be discussing ritual, eroticism, conspiracism, and the dreary spectacle of Power

Nobody can deny that we’re facing an environmental crisis. Animal species are dying off at an alarming rate, the oceans are dying, and the climate is changing. Even worse, our way of understanding and trying to address this crisis is captured within the very system that’s generating the crisis. This video takes excerpts from Leigh Phillips “Austerity Ecology,” and Frithjof Bergmann’s “New Work/New Culture” in an effort to find an exit from the kind of thinking that makes change seem impossible.

This collection of writings by Mark Fisher, author of the acclaimed Capitalist Realism, argues that we are haunted by futures that failed to happen. Fisher searches for the traces of these lost futures in the work of David Peace, John Le Carré, Christopher Nolan, Joy Division, Burial and many others.
