Sometimes you need to record in the rain or near a stream or body of water and in that case you'll want to protect your electronics from getting wet. There's a lot of different techniques out there for water protecting your electronics but in this video, I'm going to show you the way I do it.
Water can ruin your electronics in a heartbeat. You shouldn't risk your gear in general but around water, you could face everything from corrosion to burned out capacitors and no matter how your gear is damaged, it'll need to be properly restored. It's far easier to spend a few short minutes putting 25 cents worth of expendables on your equipment to prevent anything bad from happen. From light rain to complete submersion, I have you covered!
Join me as I show you in real time how to properly water seal your gear and then risk it all by testing my method!

Listening is a very personal experience. The way you hear is based on everything from the shape of your ears to the frequencies you are best tuned into. In this video I explain some of the factors that affect the way you hear the way you do. That is the primary focus of this video but to demonstrate how manipulated frequencies help you hear differently, we'll change the way you hear the Yanny/Laurel soundbyte.
In February 2015 a viral picture of a dress spawned a debate online - is the dress black and blue or white and gold? Depending on how you see and process the picture, you will likely feel strongly one way or another.
In May 2018 a short audio sample of a robotic voice saying one name circulated the internet yet again putting people's personally processing against others. This time, as with the dress debate, people would hear one or the other and not understand how anyone could hear anything different.
In this video we'll go digging into the sound wave and by the end, you'll likely be able to hear both. Hint: It's all about the frequencies you're dialed in on. For the raw sound byte, you may hear a man with a low-medium voice say "Laurel" or you'll hear a high pitched computerized voice say "Yanny".

Welcome to the fourth episode of the new 2024 podcast. Mic selection can be confusing and many viewers love asking my tricks on microphone selection so I thought we'd go over it. For the second part of this episode I thought I'd discuss why thick speaker cables are a scam. You may disagree, and that's fine, but here's my reasoning. Enjoy.

As Boom Operators we face many challenges on set. As the sole member of the sound department on a film set we have to represent our department and make decisions that mean clean dialogue recording for the Sound Mixer to deliver to post. Knowing how to make our Sound Mixer happy is absolutely critical!
Sound Mixers are all different and it's our job as Boom Operators to get our mixer the tracks he/she desires. Every mixer is different so the way we perform from mixer to mixer has to be flexible. Understanding how to please a Sound Mixer is critical and in this video, we'll talk about how to do just that.

For some reason headphone manufacturers love giving you enough cable length to wrap around your body a few times. If you're in a studio and need that 10 feet of cable, it's great but if you're walking around wearing headphones that are plugged into something on your belt, it gives you a lot cable to manage. In this video I'm going to show you pro 4 techniques that will help you manage your extra long headphones cables.
To address The Chain. It's true that you're never supposed to chain an audio cable and there's a good reason for it. Pulling and tugging the cable against itself can stretch and warp the cable. This is why I specify that you should be gentle when building your chain and your chances of damage will be next to nothing. Keep in mind that repeated chaining and unchaining is a major driving force behind how an audio cable can be damaged while chaining but if you carefully build a chain using this technique, there shouldn't be any issue.

Note: Although I've never run into any issues with any of these techniques, I need to inform you that damage may occur if you aren't careful. Perform any one of these mods at your own risk.

Welcome to the eighteenth episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. As with previous episodes we're going to discuss two topics in this video. This first is related to laving up talent. There are many ways to do it and I'm somewhat old school in my philosophy but it's peppered with modern day techniques as well. The second topic we'll discuss is how to break into sound for motion pictures. Is there an easy path or is it a difficult process? Let's talk about it!

The Dugan Automix System is well known in the audio community for it's seemless method of mixing multiple microphones together in a way that's both natural and precise. In the 1970's Dan innovated and patented numerous systems including the "Control Apparatus for Sound Reinforcement Systems", the "Dugan Speech System" and the "Dugan Gain Limiting System" making LIVE mixes of free speaking people possible in news and game show recordings and that's just the start. Even more amazing, it does it automatically. Quite literally, the Dugan Automix system makes mixing dozens of mics easy.
If you have an interest in the tech behind such systems, you'll want to watch the entire presentation. This isn't an interview, it's a master class and demonstration of the award winning, amazingly clean Dugan Automix System by Dan Dugan himself.

I'm sorry to announce that the Neptech BC-1 was an April Fools Day Prank. Hopefully you'll forgive my misleading you for 24 hours all in the name of fun.
Here is the URL to ny video where I announce this was a prank:
https://youtu.be/DuDewHhDKR0
Below is the original write-up I did and released with the video on April 01, 2018.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me start by apologizing because I don't have more details to share with you today but I was just sent this product and had to act quickly to beat the manufacturer to their first product showcase event at NAB 2018 in Las Vegas from April 7-12.
Today I'm proud to be giving you an exclusive first look at a working prototype of the Neptech BC-1 "Bluetooth Cable". Neptech is a young Dutch company making their first appearance at NAB this upcoming weekend and the BC-1 is their flagship product. Described as a zero latency "wireless cable", the BC-1 uses "bluetooth like" technology to create a short range (upto 10 meters line of sight), low noise connection between two XLR devices. The BC-1 uses it's own proprietary battery packs that can be screwed onto the BC-1 body or put to charge on the Neptech RC-2 (dual rapid charger) or RC-4 (quad rapid charger). Best of all, the BC-1 is being offered at a special half off introductory price of $39.99 from April 7-27. Orders can be placed at their booth at NAB or at the link below:
URL: I'll receive the link on Monday, April 2, 2018. Check back then!
I failed to mention it in the video but if you pre-order the RC-2 and RC-4 (Rapid Charger dual and quad units) by April 27, you'll get your first of each model at a special price of $14.99 or $27.99. Regularly they are priced at $24.99 and $39.99.
If you are going to NAB, please look for Neptech and their showcase of the BC-1. The official release will differ quite a bit different from the prototype but considering how well the prototype worked for me, I'd like to ask you to please test it out then come back and write your thoughts in the comments below. Specifically I'm interested in your thoughts on the fidelity, range, noise floor, effectiveness and consistency of the phantom power, the differences from the prototype, battery packs, charger(s) and strength of the "indestructible plastic case".
