French President Emmanuel Macron has come under fire following his recent trip to China, during which he spoke favourably about Beijing's position on Taiwan.
Macron claimed that Europe should not be "caught up in crises that are not ours" and instead should build up its "autonomy". The president's comments have been seen as an attempt to divide Europe and the United States.

An assailant identified as Faisal Butt fired a burst of bullets on former PM of Pakistan Imran Khan's container during 7th day of Azadi March at Allahwala Chowk near Gujranwala.
Reportedly, Imran Khan was injured after receiving bullet in his right leg. Dr Yasmin Rashid of PTI, however, says Imran Khan has sustained injuries on both the legs. He was immediately evacuated in a bullet-proof vehicle and shifted to hospital for treatment. Imran Khan left the venue smiling and waving to the public.
According to initial reports number of PTI leaders including Imran Ismael and Faisal Javed were also injured. One person, 42, has reportedly succumbed to injuries and has died. Minimum number of injured personnel is estimated to be six.
A brave PTI worker can be seen in a video aired on TV channels interrupting the assailant by holding him from the rear; a positive action that possibly prevented larger damage and injuries. Public in the March got hold of assailant who has been arrested.

An art collection by Microsoft founder Paul Allen was sold at auction in Christie's Rockefeller Centre, New York for $1.5 billion, setting a new world record. Allen had died of cancer in 2018 at the age of 65.
The top seller was the art piece 'Les Poseuses, Ensemble' an oil on canvas, sold for $149.2 million. 'La montagne Sainte-Victoire' was sold at $120 million.
Proceeds from the auction will benefit a range of charities that Allen supported during his lifetime. At the time of his death, Allen had a net worth of $20.8 billion. In 2010, he had pledged most of his fortune to charity.

Chinese military drills around Taiwan that were to conclude on 7 August, have been extended.
Taiwan's Defence Ministry said it had detected 39 Chinese air force planes and 13 navy ships in and around the Taiwan Strait on 8 August. 21 Chinese air force planes had entered Taiwan's air defence zone, including fighter jets that crossed the median line, the Ministry further said.
According to CNN, China fired 11 ballistic missiles north, south and east of Taiwan on 4 July as it held largest ever military exercises around Taiwan.
China had launched a series of exercises in multiple zones around Taiwan in retaliation to US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.
During military exercises, China straddled some of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and at some points just 16.5 kms from the island's shore.

Lieutenant General Sajjad Ghani, a structural engineer, who hails from the Engineers Corps of Pakistan Army, is most qualified officer for the slot. Under his auspicious management, WAPDA is likely to turn the corner and see impetus.
Lieutenant General Ghani was Quartermaster General in Pakistan Army and later Corps Commander Karachi. In Army, he is known as a hero soldier whose field performance in counter terrorism operations was unmatchable.
