All abo tools. Weather is slightly drizzly and around 55F. Direct percussion with hard hammerstone. Heat treated Edwards Plateau chert.
The flake is useful immediately after being removed from the core: the blade edges are extremely sharp and delicate at this stage. Excellent for skinning. Further refinements are made to strengthen the edge and produce a predetermined size and shape for the overall blade. Can be used as a knife (with or without handle) or projectile point.
The lighting is a combination of firelight and a 13 watt halogen, soft white bulb about 3 feet away. The camera is a Zi10 (Kodak Play Touch) attached to a homemade boom and set to "macro" mode (closeup). A stereo microphone is plugged into the camera and dangling from the boom.

WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.

Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

In this video series, I use materials gathered from Native American campsites (in central Texas) to reproduce some points that have been found in the area. It was a very good experience that revealed a lot about the materials that were actually gathered and utilized by the Indians. The material seemed to be either very easy or very difficult to work with. All the pieces were previously worked to some extent. In my opinion, the good material was cached and the difficult material was discarded. They two types became mixed very recently when found and gathered together to form a collection of bifaces and cores.
