Show Notes: How to Make Large Plant Pots to Control Mints SpreadThis post is about How to Make Large Plant Pots to Control Mints Spread. Previously I had mint just going wild in my garden area and it took over. This year I removed that mint from the garden area, but I still like my mint for teas and salads. So, I put together these large plant pots to contain the mints spread via underground rhizomes. The Pot and Drainage Holes The Pot is simply a 40 gallon storage tub I picked up from the local hardware store. I would have gone larger, but this is all they had in stock at the time. Once I had the pots, I then drilled 12 holes in the bottom of the pot to let excess water escape. Next, I put down landscape fabric to cover the holes. This was done to prevent the soil from exiting through the holes and to prevent the mint rhizomes from exiting through the holes. Because this is recycled landscape fabric with holes, I doubled it. Fill the Large Pot with Soil Next I filled the large pots with soil. I had some Pete moss laying around so I put a few inches of that down first. This will serve to hold some of the moisture. I also had some potting soil laying around so I filled the pot to within a few inches of the rim of the pot with the potting soil. Then I thoroughly watered the soil to make sure the sides didn’t burst with all the weight. The sides did fine. The plants grew fine and the soil did not dry out too fast. I had concerns about the soil drying too quick because of being raised up, but there was no issue with that.
