Digging up Gooseberry plants Oct 18th 2022
In this video, I start digging up the gooseberry plants that have been propagated by the stooling or hilling method. I ended up needing to use Elon (Takeuchi TB290) to help dig them up along with the roots and rhizomes of all the weeds that have been growing out of control in these marginal beds. I'll give an update soon as we get the area for the sand margins.

Where did the bees go? It has been the roughest spring that I can recall. Extended cold throughout March and April this year. None of the hives survived the prolonged cold spring. We have always had plenty of pollinators on the property, however, this spring we really have to search for even a mason bee.

In this video, I continue my work by burying dead trees and wild grape vines in large hugelkultur pits. This system has worked great for us for over a decade. The wood is buried eliminating the need to create burn piles while sequestering carbon and water in the soil. The sand and gravel are then used on different parts of the property for access roads. Noxious weeds and poison ivy are also buried in the process. The forest microbes slowly break down the material and convert the pits into a carbon-rich subsoil.
