Thomas Sunday. The Lord is a person just like us and will, as He did for Thomas, accommodate to our needs because He understands us, being one of us.
There are two beautiful aspects to the story of Thomas encountering Jesus Christ on the eighth day after the resurrection. Thomas was historically the first person to state that Jesus Christ is God and man. What led up to his statement is even more incredibly beautiful in some ways. Jesus Christ is a human being as well as God and knows the needs of every human being. He accommodated to the weakness of Thomas in an intimate personal interaction. He does that with all of us. We talk about this in the event and the other resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ, which also shows that every encounter with Christ is a personal and intimate encounter. We are not alone. We are understood.

Fr Nicholas first shares something from one of the hymns of tone 8, which segues into a full exegesis of Psalm 98,which is a Messianic Psalm (about the cross), and contains the oft-used verse: “Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship the footstool of His feet, for He is holy.”

The Scriptures, especially the Epistles, are full of “mnemonics” – things that you can commit to memory to help you encounter temptations and other life situations, and examples of how holy people pray. We should look for these things, and add them to the way we think and pray. An example is in the selection from Colossians that we read today.
I have created many prayers gleaned from the Epistles of St Paul and other scripture. They are always a work in progress, so do not “shoot the editor”, but such as they are, perhaps one or two will be edifying for you:

0:00 Eph 4:1 I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord,
0:33 Eph 4:1 … beseech you to walk worthily of the calling wherewith ye were called, 4:2 with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 4:3 giving diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
0:59 – 1:57 Christianity is a moral way of life. Why?
1:03 – 1:57 Why do we follow the commandments and try to do good works?
3:19 – 5:38 What is “meekness”?
3:56 – 5:38 “Meekness” is accepting the Providence of God in our life.
5:43 Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling; 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 4:6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all.
8:14 – 8:42 A prayer based on Eph 4:1-6
10:28 Eph 4:7 But unto each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
20:51 Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, And gave gifts unto men.
26:40 Eph 4:9 (Now this, He ascended, what is it but that he also descended into the lower parts of the earth? 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)
27:48 Eph 4:11 And he (himself) gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
47:34 Eph 4:12 for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ:
49:30 Eph 4:13 till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a fullgrown (perfect) man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 4:14 that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; 4:15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; 4:16 from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love.
54:55 – 56:14 The best things I have ever said are the things I did not say.

We discuss Psalm 47, from the Spiritual Psalter of St Ephrem the Syrian. It speaks about our intimate relationship with the saints, why it is beneficial to pray to them, and how we can cultivate a relationship with them, just as we do with people in the world.
