Small business has faced a lot of challenges over the past few decades and has had many opportunities as well. When I look at the most small businesses in our community, the strongest ones have been the ones that have done a great job marketing through social media and have utilized technology to their advantage rather than being victims of it. As great as social media has been as a tool, it also brings up the risk of over reliance. Something I'll call Platform Risk. What do when the winds of change erase our hard earned followings? How do we prevent having to completely start over every 5 years as the new hot platform takes over? Answer: You need to own the customer relationship.
