This big brother is completely silent. Not good. Zenith Trans-Oceanic Royal D7000Y restore, part 1.
I've had the good fortune of working on two Zenith Trans-Oceanic Royal 3000 sets, but never on this more advanced model. The Trans-Oceanic D7000Y is one of the last really great world receivers made by Zenith, and is a true collectors' item. If you don't believe me, look at the prices they're fetching. Quite amazing. This one has been in the hands of a previous tech, who did not manage to fix it. It comes to me completely silent, which is good for some people, but definitely not for a radio. I've looked forward to this project for some time, and now need to do it justice. Wish me luck.
TimeStamps 00:00 This big brother is completely silent. Not good. Zenith Trans-Oceanic Royal D7000Y restore, part 1. 00:10 Introduction. 02:04 First look. 06:05 How to dismantle. 09:32 A look out of the cabinet. 14:00 Power up test. 19:08 results after the re-cap. 23:27 Conclusion.
Schaub-Lorenz Goldy 58 type 3020 tube radio restoration log part 3.
The alignment problem is sorted, and the AM reception is back to normal. The cabinet work is done, and the result is quite surprising. My faith is restored in these 'kitchen radios', and I'm never going to underestimate one of these 'small' radios again.

Make your own abrasive polishing buff for your favourite rotary tool, at a small fraction of the cost of the purchased ones. You can literally make these amazingly useful accessories for pennies, and in a couple of minutes.
They are ideal for cleaning and polishing brass, wood and just about any material you need some abrasive material to finish or polish.
I use them in my radio restorations for a multitude of applications, and just got tired of spending a small fortune on the available ones, which wear off in no time at all.
The idea for these is not original: I've seen them described in a couple of places on the web.

#diyelectronics #diyaudio PCB Prototype for $2 (Any Color ): https://jlcpcb.com/
The boards for the attenuator project arrived and I was anxious to build it up and test it.
A careful selection of attenuation steps will allow me to settle for four switchable levels, which will make the unit more compact. Always a good thing.
Online calculators now exist for practically everything, and Pi Attenuator resistor calculators are no exception. The same applies for calculating the equivalent resistance of multiple resistors in parallel, which are used here.
The final stage is defining the required refinements for version 2. I’ve identified a few:
1. Adding pads for 3 resistors for every resistor position to facilitate achieving more exact R values;
2. Making holes and pads for the IN/OUT connect points bigger;
3. Changing the orientation of the “leg” resistors to bring their ground points closer to the signal path;
4. Adding many more vias between ground planes to reduce noise and improve linearity;
5. Connecting the chassis to the ground to make the shielding properties of the front panel effective;
6. Changing the ‘last’ stage to 24dB, making it even more selectable;
7. Changing the blocking capacitors to through-hole 630v caps, to safeguard against any HV anomaly getting back into the signal generator. The smd ones are lower rating.
... and there’ll be more, I’m sure.
It wouldn't be fun if you did it perfectly right the first time, would it? I wouldn't know - never happens to me.

I have needed a 200MHz scope for some time (actually, I've wanted one - not quite the same thing), and I now have one. I bought it from Welectron, and they did give me a discount as it will appear often and prominently on my channel.
However, there is one feature that I couldn't resist highlighting. It's called Web Control, and I'm finding it extremely useful for reasons that Siglent designers may not have planned when they added it to this series of oscilloscopes.
Web Control allows me to view and control the scope in real-time from a browser. It connects to my network and allows me two access it via a generated IP address. Having the scope screen on my screen, as it were, allows me to do screen recording to show the scope when I want it to appear on my video. It's really cool and hassle-free, so will come in very handy.
I'm sure that I'll find many more reasons to talk about this scope in future videos, but this feature got me really excited, so I couldn't wait.
Visit Welectron and have a look at some of the cool stuff they sell. I've bought my Brymen multimeters from them, as well as a few accessories that I use constantly, so I'm much more a customer than a guy that got a discount :)
