Author: John Aubrey File Type: epub WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY RUTH SCURRJohn Aubrey was a modest man, a self-styled antiquarian and the man who invented modern biography. His lives of the prominent figures of his generation and the Elizabethan era, including Shakespeare, Milton and Sir Walter Raleigh, have been plundered by historians for centuries for their frankness and fascinating detail. Collected here are all of Aubreys biographical writings, a series of unforgettable portraits of the characters of his day, still more alive and kicking than in any conventional work of history.

To apply the same approaches to analysing spoken and written formulaic language is problematic to do so masks the fact that the contextual meaning of spoken formulaic language is encoded, to a large extent, in its prosody. In The Prosody of Formulaic Sequences, Phoebe Lin offers a new perspective on formulaic language, arguing that while past research often treats formulaic language as a lexical phenomenon, the phonological aspect of it is a more fundamental facet. This book draws its conclusions from three original, empirical studies of spoken formulaic language, assessing intonation unit boundaries as well as features such as tempo and stress placement. Across all studies, Lin considers questions of methodology and conceptual framework. The corpus-based descriptions of prosody outlined in this book not only deepen our understanding of the nature of formulaic language but have important implications for English Language Teaching and automatic speech synthesis. **Review In a linguistic research world dominated by the computers love of the written word, we need a more methodical approach to the characterization and identification of formulaic language in speech. Phoebe Lins very welcome book takes the reader through the complex process of empirically identifying contributory factors marking formulaicity in spoken language, and explores methods for improving its identification. Alison Wray, Research Professor in Language and Communication, Cardiff University, UK Phoebe Lins study is a very welcome contribution to the field of applied linguistics. She extends the traditional study of FS as discrete structures and reveals the importance of their functions in different discourse environments. The book is packed with insights and is highly recommended for advanced students and researchers. Ronald Carter, Research Professor of Modern English Language, University of Nottingham, UK The volume is a valuable and timely addition to the existing literature on formulaic language. Although recent years have seen a lot of interest in this phenomenon, prosody has been largely overlooked. The three empirical studies that make up the volume shed important light on the prosody of formulaic language, highlighting its unique role in language learning and use, and providing a rich research agenda for future enquiry. When P.V. Narasimha Rao became the unlikely prime minister of India in 1991, he inherited economic catastrophe, violent insurgencies and a nation adrift. Yet because he was unloved by his people and mistrusted by his own party-a minority in Parliament and ruling under the shadow of Sonia Gandhi-Rao lacked the mandate to combat these crises. Yet, Rao was not just able to last a full five years as Prime Minister, he reinvented India, at home and abroad. Few world leaders have achieved so much with so little power. With exclusive access to Raos never-before-seen personal papers as well as over a hundred interviews, Vinay Sitapatis definitive biography tells the story of Indias makeover in the 1990s and the story of the Deng Xiaoping-like figure who did it. Assuming power over an ossified, quasi-socialist economy burdened by inefficient industrial behemoths, Rao was instrumental in driving through a broad set of liberalizing economic reforms that transformed India. Raos career is the ideal window through which to understand how India became a force in the global economy almost overnight. Sitapati traces Raos life from a village in Telangana through his years in power and-afterward-his humiliation in retirement. Yet the book never loses sight of the inner man-his difficult childhood, his corruptions and love affairs, and his lingering loneliness. Meticulously researched and honestly told, this landmark political biography is a must-read for anyone interested in the man responsible for transforming India. **

We have entered the age of perversion, an era in which we are becoming more like machines and they more like us. The Age of Perversion explores the sea changes occurring in sexual and social life, made possible by the ongoing technological revolution, and demonstrates how psychoanalysts can understand and work with manifestations of perversion in clinical settings. Until now theories of perversion have limited their scope of inquiry to sexual behavior and personal trauma. The authors of this book widen that inquiry to include the social and political sphere, tracing perversions existential roots to the human experience of being a conscious animal troubled by the knowledge of death. Offering both creative and destructive possibilities, perversion challenges boundaries and norms in every area of life and involves transgression, illusion casting, objectification, dehumanization, and the radical quest for transcendence. This volume presents several clinical cases, including a man who lived with and loved a sex doll, a woman who wanted to be a Barbie doll, and an Internet sex addict. Also examined are cases of widespread social perversion in corporations, the mental health care industry, and even the government. In considering the continued impact of technology, the authors discuss how it is changing the practice of psychotherapy. They speculate about what the future may hold for a species who will redefine what it means to be human more in the next few decades than during any other time in human history. The Age of Perversion provides a novel examination of the convergence of perversion and technology that will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, social workers, mental health counselors, sex therapists, sexologists, roboticists, and futurists, as well as social theorists and students and scholars of cultural studies.
