Why I Quit my Management Job to Grow Plants for a Living
I took a delayed start to my career in horticulture - working in retail management to support my family. In this live presentation I'll talk about why (and how) I eventually decided to leave the security of my retail career to take a job in an ornamental wholesale nursery. One property of your potting mix you should be concerned with: does you soil have enough air spaces to maintain healthy roots? In this video, I'll demonstrate a quick an easy way to measure the approximate air-filled porosity (AFP) of your potting mix. The higher the porosity, the more air space there is for your plant roots - but it also means you may have to water more frequently. With a lower AFP, you can go longer between watering, but your plants may be more susceptible to root rot disease. Generally, a good AFP for containers and nursery production is between 15 and 25%. I've added a new biopesticide to my rotation. What's that? In combination with baking soda (and other potassium salts used as fungicidal treatments) chitosan was shown to increase effectiveness dramatically. In this video, I'll show you how I've formulated my spray application and discuss the reasons I'm starting this mix into my rotation for foliar disease control (mainly).

This is more a nursery topic, but I'm sure home container growers will also benefit from the discussion. Traditionally, I up-pot my plants from smaller sized pots or plugs, through intermediately sized pots, and then on to the final pot size. But that can be a lot of work! What about the approach of potting the smaller plant into its final pot size to "grow into it"? There are pros and cons of both methods, and here I'll discuss some of my considerations around labour, space, soil and watering.

This is what happens when you grow roses under LED lights indoors: similar to the control group grown outside, but a little quicker to flower in this experiment. There were a couple of challenges: spider mites (dealt with in this video: https://youtu.be/mI5zowOac6I), and high humidity (which I'll deal with in recommendations in this video).

Pruning roses doesn't have to be complicated. In this video I'll prune two example roses, one of them fairly overgrown. I generally start from the base of the rose, thinning out old and congested growth first. When I have a well-spaced framework down low, I can then choose a manageable height and a pleasing shape.
