King Abdul Halim lives in my Condo. I'm not kidding. He rents out the penthouse suite and visits it once a month or so. I thought that was a pretty interesting addition to the amazingness that I have been experiencing since arriving back in Southeast Asia. Though it's more of an Arabic name, the term "sultan" is the same thing as "king" in Malaysia. And Abdul Halim is the King/Sultan of Wilayah Per Seketuan. I was a little too excited when I was doing the video to do my homework until later! But while sultanates (lands designated to the Sultan) no longer exist, kingdoms (which have a different connotation) belong to the King -- hence the confusion. Driving along on my trip through the Penghu Islands this week, I saw this puffer fish swimming, chasing bugs and sifting through the trash and poisoned, floating dead fish of a boat dock. Driving through the streets of Makong is an amazing experience. The mix of the old, traditional world at odds with the new age of architecture and technology has never before hit me with the gritty realism as it has here. This must be Asia's Hawaii because of its sunny, surfable shores, its wide range of geologically diverse basalt-based islands and the laid back island mentality of the amazingly nice people here. But make no mistake, it's still unfailingly Asian. And this temple is a testament to that idea.
