You might hear yourself thinking in the form of a question like this: * What if I don't get to work on time? * What if I run out of money this month? As the great Insight Meditation teacher, Jack Kornfield, reminds us "We have a negativity bias in the mind". We will default to the negative far more often than to the positive. This unfortunately makes many people loop on regrets, worries, concerns, anxieties, resentments to the detriment of their health, relationships, productivity, income and overall happiness. On the other hand, as the great author Jean Houston, once said, “What you appreciate appreciates”. Here’s a trick to refocus your mind in a constructive direction. Your creative mind wants to chew on something, and it will default to the negative if you don't have a habit for turning it around. For example, have you ever tried to get yourself to stop worrying and then you just start right back up again a few moments later? Its like a puppy chewing on your slipper. If you want the puppy to let it go, you have to give her something else to focus on instead. You give her a ball to play with. But if you try to get the slipper away from your puppy she will fight you for it. It’s the same with your creative mind. Give it another toy by asking a positive version of the same question. For example: * What if I DO get to work on time? * What if I have more than enough money this month? Have you ever rushed around like crazy trying to do as many things as possible so you can go on vacation and relax? Ironic, but very common. I used to think that if I just worked longer hours and rushed faster that the feeling of overwhelm would eventually subside. But I now notice that never really works over the long term, because the rate of change is just speeding up and rushing faster is an impossible expectation. There is a deeper, more powerful and longer lasting solution. 80% OF THE REASON YOU FEEL OVERWHELMED IS BECAUSE OF YOUR MINDSET Regularly feeling overwhelmed is just a bad habit of mind and actually a cultural transfer for which many people pay a big price. A recent poll of entrepreneurs and people in high-pressure jobs had task lists for just one day that would realistically take an average of two weeks to complete. OVERWHELM CAN NEGATIVELY AFFECT ALL AREAS OF LIFE People who feel overwhelmed are more likely catch a cold. Relationships suffer. If you dwell on how overwhelmed you feel it can make you less fun to be with on a date. Overwhelm actually makes you think less effectively and less creatively. In fact feeling overwhelmed is directly linked to digestive problems, moodiness ADHD and sleep problems. Feeling overwhelmed triggers the primitive fight or flight brain which can lead you to do or say things you might regret later. Over the long term the overwhelmed mindset has been linked to divorce, depression, suicide, cancer, dementia and financial problems. WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP GETTING STUCK IN OVERWHELM? Many people are unconsciously programmed for feeling overwhelmed. The human mind tends to imprint negative experiences far more often than positive ones. Neuroscientists say this is the primitive brain response. The primitive brain is consciously scanning for danger. This is kind of a system flaw when you think about it because it means you remember far more negative experiences than positive ones, giving you the overall impression that life is dangerous and unpleasant. WHAT YOU FOCUS ON GROWS To shift out of the habit of feeling overwhelmed you must override that program, much like installing new software on your computer. YOU CAN LET GO OF OVERWHELM WITHOUT ANYTHING IN YOUR EXTERNAL LIFE CHANGING You can have the same amount of stress, obligations, deadlines and frantic people all around you and still find calm and clarity, because sometimes you can't change those external circumstances.
