Muslim YouTubers Accused of 'Deliberate Incitement' for Confronting Jews
On May 22nd, two Muslim YouTubers, Mohammed Hijab and Ali Dawah, were accused of causing direct and deliberate act of incitement after questioning Jewish people in Golders Green area of the United Kingdom about Israel and Palestine. Mohammed Hijab and Ali Dawah, who together have a million subscribers on YouTube, shared videos of themselves asking Jewish people to denounce Israel’s operations. In Dawah’s video, he is seen following Jewish people, including children, and asking them if they condemn what Israel does. A member of the Community Security Trust said that they see this confrontation as a deliberate act of incitement that would inevitably alarm the community and stir up tensions.

Recently, a group of young Muslims aggressively heckled a group protesting the death sentence of Iranian LGBTQ activists Zahra Sedighi-Hamadani and Elham Chobdar in Cologne, Germany. An Instagram video posted by veteran activist Maryam Namazie showed the angry youth shouting "Allahu Akbar" as the group tried to explain their intentions. In an interview with the Atheist Republic News Team, Namazie said she was about to give a speech when the incident happened. "I was holding an ‘Allah is a Woman’ sign," she said. It was just one of the signs the protesters were holding, while most signs in the protests supported Zahra and Elham. "They saw the sign, and that's when they started shouting ‘Allahu Akbar,’" Namazie explained. The caption of her video reads, "Let me repeat, they were not offended by two women being executed in Iran by an Islamic regime but by a sign." Namazie saw beyond the hateful speech by the hecklers. "They were mixing [sexes], they were dressed in the western style, they were in the public spaces, and [one was] not wearing a hijab," she described the group of young Muslims who heckled their protest. "For me, these are young people who are stuck in these positions, who obviously want to live the life they want but are held by identity politics and culturalism," she said. She compared the realities of the two activists they are fighting for, Zahra and Elham, to that of the hecklers. "Dogma and hate were so strong it could have warped their minds," she said. She said there are times that she gets mad with people that are unwilling to listen to opposing opinions. But this time, she did not feel anger towards them. "I find their reaction heartbreaking; it did not anger me; I felt heartbroken," she said. Earlier this month, a court in Tehran, Iran, sentenced a man to forced blinding. The unidentified man stands accused of blinding his neighbor during a fight in 2018. According to the victim, the accused stabbed him in the eye, causing irreparable damage. “I have suffered a lot in these four years, and I have no intention of forgiving,” the victim said. The sentencing shows the use of Qisas, an Islamic principle that calls for a punishment equal to the inflicted damage. This principle operates similarly to the biblical phrase in the book of Leviticus, “an eye for an eye.” Oftentimes, victims will accept “blood” money as compensation for the harm they endured, instead of pursuing literal physical retribution. On May 8th, Thawee Nanra, a 75-year-old cult leader, was arrested on trespassing charges in a jungle in Chaiyaphum province in northeastern Thailand. One of the additional charges still pending against him is unlawful disposal of bodies. The authorities were alerted by Khun Jenjira, who claims that her 80-year-old mother has been living with the cult and has been barred from returning home. When investigating, local authorities discovered at least 11 corpses on the property. Police determined that the bodies were of his former followers. He also had at least 12 people living with him. Nanra’s devotees believed that the leader’s urine, mucus, even his excrement, could cure disease and would regularly consume them. As Nanra was escorted to a police vehicle, his devotees harassed the officers and tried to prevent his removal. Nanra has been denied bail while the investigation continues.
