Beer Review 516: Taj Mahal Premium Lager, United Breweries WTF WEDNESDAY !! ?? Indian Beer ??
Beer Review 516: Taj Mahal Premium Lager, United Breweries, Bangalore, India. Purchased: BG Beverage Center, Bowling Green, Ohio. Brewery: https://www.unitedbreweries.com/
While in Bowling Green, I stopped by one of my favorite beer shops and scooped up a 650 mL (1 pint, 6 oz.) bottle of this Indian beer. This comes in at 4.5% ABV and poured a clear light straw color with a one-finger white soapy head. The nose was subtle, with light grassy notes and a bit of adjunct sweetness. This was light bodied and smooth, and went down easy. You could pick up light cracker malt, some grassiness, light sweetness, and a faint spicy finish. While not the best beer I have ever had, this was alright and I would have another.

Anderson was kind enough to bring this WTF Wednesday entry all they way from Colorado Springs, where he acquired it at a convenience store. This comes in at 8.5% ABV and poured a dark golden color with a few small bubbles and a thin white head that dissipated quickly. The nose on this was surprisingly subtle, with a bit of light sweetness coming through. This was medium/light bodied and one of the worst beers I have ever tried. It was cloyingly sweet and grossly bitter at the same time. I would not recommend this one.

Beer Review 510: Terra, HiteJinro, Seoul, South Korea.
Purchased: Half Time Beverage, Poughkeepsie, New York
Brewery: https://en.hitejinro.com/brand/view.asp?brandcd2=A10
I picked up a single bottle of this South Korean beer in my order from Half Time Beverage. This Euro Lager comes in at 4.6% ABV and poured a pale straw color with a ton of carbonation and a big, pillowy white head. The nose was the sweetness I associate with adjunct lagers, but it wasn't offensive, nor was it skunky despite the fact that it is sold in a green bottle. This was light bodied, verging on watery and really did not have a whole lot going on. You picked up some light sweetness, some cracker malt and that is about it. I suppose it is sessionable, as it has a low ABV and watery body. While there was nothing particularly off putting about this beer, it did nothing well, and for that reason I would not buy it again.

Beer Review 416: Lunch, Maine Beer Company, Freeport, Maine.
Purchased: Acquired via Pete
Brewery: https://www.mainebeercompany.com/welcome-1
Pete was kind enough to send us a bottle of this American IPA to review. This one comes in at 7% ABV, and poured a beautiful cloudy golden color with a nice frothy white head. The nose was enticing with mild citrus and tropical fruit notes. This was medium bodied and was the perfect combination of malt sweetness and hop bitterness. What we also liked was this seemed to have both citrus and piney hops, but neither were overpowering. This was an amazing beer and we were thrilled to give it a try! Thanks again for sharing this one Pete!!

When I saw that Budweiser was issuing a limited edition can honoring the late Notorious B.I.G. I was thrilled and excited to buy one. After doing a little reading I found out this was only available in Brooklyn. Luckily, my good friend from law school, Sachin, lives in BK and agreed to send me a can. I will probably do a WTF Wednesday video reviewing Bud in the near future, but thought this can was too cool not to share. Thanks Sach for the hookup!!

Today is my birthday and the 3rd Anniversary of the channel. As I am in Peja, Kosovo teaching a summer class at Haxhi Zeka University, it is only fitting that I review a beer made in this city, Peja Pilsner. This is a beer I have had before over the years while in Kosovo, but I have never reviewed it, so it is new to the channel. This pilsner comes in at 4.2% ABV and poured a light golden color with a nice white frothy head and moderate carbonation. The nose on this was nondescript, with light bready malt and a hint of grassiness. This was medium bodied, with some bready sweetness hitting you initially, which eventually gives wayward to a rye-like bitterness. I think the sweetness balanced well against the bitterness and that this was a solid beer, especially on a warm summer day. All things considered, I give this. a thumbs up and will certainly have another (probably in 15 minutes or so...)

Beer Review 453: Curious Visitors, Pipeworks Brewing, Chicago, Illinois.
Purchased: via Anderson
Brewery: https://pdubs.net/home-1
Anderson acquired a 4-pack of this yuzu ginger sour from Chicago's Pipeworks while in the Windy City a few weeks back. This one comes in at 4.5% ABV and poured a pale straw color with a chunky white head, which was surprising considering this was a sour. There was moderate carbonation and the nose was subtle citrus (yuzu). This was medium bodied, slightly tart, with light citrus and ginger notes. I think would have been better if the ginger was amped up a little, but still, as is, it was a solid brew.

Anderson was kind enough to secure two cans of this All-Ohio made collaboration kellerbier from Columbus based Land Grant and Columbiana's Birdfish Brewing. This one is made with locally grown hops and malts and it is great to see what can be done using only Ohio grown ingredients. This one comes in at 5.9% ABV and poured a hazy, cloudy, dark gold color with a prolific amount of head. The nose was hoppier than expected and this had a nice medium body with a bit of viscosity to it. This was hoppier than most kellerbiers I have tried, but that was not necessarily a bad thing. The hops were not piney or tropical, but appeared to be good old fashioned bittering hops, which worked nicely with the bready malt backbone. All things considered this was a flavorful, well balanced Kellerbier. I look forward to trying some more beers from these breweries.
