Ochette's hunt for the three legendary beasts is over, and now she brings them back to the Beasting Village at Toto'haha to prepare for the impending calamity. As the Night of the Scarlet Moon arrives, the island is assaulted by creatures of darkness the likes of which Ochette had never seen before. After holding down the fort, Ochette, Akala, and Master Juvah meet the creature at the heart of the calamity: a monstrous shadowy mutation of the other animal companion that Ochette didn't choose at the start of her journey, known as The Darkling. As a result, the final boss fight varies from player to player. I chose Akala the Lajackal as my companion, so Mahina the Malamaowl became the final boss. Likewise, if you chose Mahina, Akala will become the final boss. Whichever one you fight, you're in for a nasty fight ahead. The Darkling can inflict random status effects on you, give itself various buffs by preying upon a party member and reducing their HP to 1, and can mutate during the fight changing its weaknesses and giving itself an extra action. After the fight, Ochette befriends the Darkling, giving it a final peaceful moment before death after 10 years of torture. During breakfast the following morning, Ochette tells Master Juvah that protecting the island no longer feels like a heavy burden and that she wants to do it.
