JESUS WARNS THAT THERE ARE--3 GROUPS GOING TO HEAVEN & 3 GROUPS GOING TO HELL. The Good Heart (Mark 4.1-20) One day, in one verse -- Jesus describes everyone in the world that will go to Heaven. And in five other verses, He describes those who will not. Have you ever reflected on His descriptions? Jesus said the words we are about to read as a warning for some (Watch out – you are Hell bound) and as a comfort for all the rest (Rejoice – you are Heaven bound). So what does He say in this description? He said a heart that remains Trampled and Hardened Against God, Shallow With God, or Crowded Towards God will not enjoy the pleasures of God forever. Beware! Jesus goes on to describe everyone on the planet that will be enjoying Heaven forever as being -- Good. Just as there are three types of lost Hellbound people types, there are also three different types of Heaven bound. There are three levels, three categories, three degrees of fruitful lives. Basic, Better, and the BEST! Among the Good, there are the 30 times over Good, the 60 times over Good, and the 100 times over Good. Now if you just analyzed what I said and thought – “Nope, don’t have to worry. I have already DONE that.” Then think again. Salvation is not something you can DO. It is something that only God can do IN YOU and me. So here is the way Jesus explains all this. One day Jesus compared life to a field, people to soil, the Gospel to seed, and eternal life to a crop of harvested righteousness. Taken at face value, the message of the parable of the soils is clear: of four soils, only one is good. Only one produces fruit, and thus it alone is of any value to the farmer. This good soil pictures the believer. The weedy soil and the shallow soil are pretenders. The soil by the wayside is an absolute rejecter. Indeed, the fruit is the ultimate test of true salvation. In the harvest, weedy soil is no better than the hard road or shallow ground. All are worthless. The seed sown there is wasted, and the ground is fit for nothing except burning (cf. Heb. 6:8). It cannot picture salvation. There are many ways to look at how God classifies us this morning. But we know the basis from all of His other parables. The harvest from the life is only because the heart was Good. No amount of effort can make a heart Good. Goodness only comes from God. Fruit always comes from a Good heart. That fruit or harvest may be 30, 60, or 100 – but a good heart brings forth goodness for God’s sake. The most important question you will ever answer is the question, “Has God ever made you good?” Not -- are you trying hard to be good. Not -- have you done some good things – because bad people can always do good things if they want to. It is not what you do so much as what you are. Either we are good or evil as the center of our being. We were born not innocent but evil. We don’t get polluted by our world as much as we pollute our world. Are you good? Only God is good, so only God can make us good within. Hell is a place where people will have eternally unsatisfied desires for drugs, alcohol, and sex. However, those desires will be multiplied without the means to satisfy them. They will live forever in the blackness of darkness, in a bottomless pit, suffering fire with those desires just eating them up from the inside out. This is the unending consuming worm of hell— the lusts accumulated over a lifetime. Only Jesus Christ can satisfy your righteous desires or take away the wrong ones to replace them with a spring of freshwater so that you no longer desire the saltwater of this world: My soul thirsts for God, for the living God … (Psalm 42:2). Only Jesus can satisfy your soul; only God can quench your thirst. Each day the sun evaporates a trillion tons of water from the oceans and continents and pumps it as vapor into the atmosphere—the greatest physical force at work on earth. Each day the same amount of vapor condenses and falls as rain, snow, sleet, and hail, replenishing its sources. But this is no natural lack of water; we cause our own thirst by our sin. Jesus has satisfying power. In Revelation 16:4-7 we see that life without Jesus is endless thirst, but Jesus has the power to satisfy us so that we will never thirst: … “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, … out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37-38). I am reminded of the fastest-growing segment of cyberspace: the thirst-inducing segment. Did you know that lust and all the accompanying products that develop lust in human beings (as in pornography and all its deviances) is like a thirsting person in the desert drinking saltwater, hoping to stop their thirst? The more they drink, the thirstier they are; it is a self-destructive pattern. Jesus says, “If you are not in Me, you will have nothing but endless thirst.” In Christ, we will be constantly satisfied by Jesus and never experience such endless thirst. As you look at this fresh new year before us, I wonder--HAVE YOU EVER BEEN DISCIPLED? By that, I mean, have you ever sat and learned about the basics of following Christ from someone, one-on-one, where you could pause them and ask questions? HAVE YOU BEEN PERSONALLY DISCIPLED? That personal, face-to-face discipleship model: is what Jesus Christ did in the Four Gospels when He called and trained His 12 disciples. That personal, face-to-face discipleship model: is what we see being done in the Book of Acts. That personal, face-to-face discipleship model is: what prompts the letters to individuals and churches that are called the Epistles of the New Testament. That personal, face-to-face discipleship model is: often rare in our fast-paced, overwhelmed lives; but it is priceless when given and received. I have to admit that no one ever came up to me and asked me if they could teach me the basics of the life of a believer. I went to Sunday School, Youth Group, and countless church services. All were good, and all were filled with so much truth, but I never had that model of a Q&A, sit-down, face-to-face discipleship. I had only read about discipleship in books and read about discipleship in missionary biographies. So when I started in college, I decided to stop waiting and start getting discipled. I made a list of men who impressed me with their study skills, teaching manner, preaching style, public prayers, Scripture memory, and soul-winning or evangelism skills. Then systematically over eight years, I followed, wrote, called, and persisted with that list until I had sat with each one and asked them how to learn to do what they did. It was an amazing time.
