If we got lost on the path, the best way to get back on is to tend to causes and conditions and see what was forgotten. It all leads up to Right Concentration. You gain pleasure up the Jhanic arc, and develop rapture (Jhana 1), bliss (Jhana 2), satisfaction (Jhana 3), and equanimity (Jhana 4). These aren't spaced out states, sleep states, they're not a grind, but instead they are bright aware Flow states that are quite happy and peaceful.

Taking Stock is exactly that. I provide a summary I've what I've covered and how it all works together. I also include some of what I learned in Psychoanalysis and how Narcissism is factoring in big with Woke Psychology contemporaneously. We have to look at the Psychological Objects in our minds with meditation and see the hidden aggression and do something about it before it's too late. We are also broaching June 1st which is World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day (https://wnaad.com/) and it's important to look at all professions and how this infection of Narcissism can seep into all supposedly good deeds, and even in areas that are supposedly heroically fighting it. Any institution, including psychology and therapy, are not immune. It ends on a note of the pressure we can feel sometimes for growth.

If sexual craving be repressed, why do some people become pathological, and others can instead successfully channel their desire into great works of art and literature? If everything is about sexual craving, then how do people get out of bed, and enjoy vigorous and intense hobbies and interests. For Freud this is explained as a transfer of energy from sex to ambition. He called this mechanism, Sublimation.

Like in his book on dreams, Freud begins "The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious" with a survey of expert opinions on the workings of humour. They include novelist Jean Paul, psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin, and philosophers, Theodor Vischer, Kuno Fischer, and Theodor Lipps. Their opinions include ways to view humour as "playful judgment", "a free play of ideas", "sense in nonsense", "bafflement and light dawning." Lipp emphsizes brevity, "wit says what it does say, not always in few, but always in too few words." This allows the listener the pleasure to figure things out. With more depth some of the opinions move closer to where Freud is heading. To have wit is to have "the ability to...find hidden similarities", and "linking two ideas which in some way are contrasted with each other."

Many people want success, but they are not sure about the work involved. In some cases it’s wise to just start, but momentum is hard to build and it’s easy to quit. There are also questions about what is authentic when one has been on a wrong path with a goal or they feel that they are simply making another person’s dreams real but not their own. The reality in psychology is that it all starts with a basic autonomy of a self that can make authentic choices, and no matter what, there will always be some exploration, trial and error, before finding a sliver of authenticity. That sliver involves some feeling in the body that a person likes or dislikes, and is not covered over by a disguise.

After seeing the danger in desire with Right View, one has to look at motivations on how to navigate happiness. There's now an interest to investigate motivations and to rate their value. It can be translated in many different ways, but Thanissaro Bhikkhu calls it Right Resolve.

Bridging the 19th century’s experience with Darwin and hard science, with softer sciences of hypnotism and free association.

John Yates, also known as Culadasa, directs the Dharma Treasure Buddhist Sangha in Tuscon, Arizona. He has worked in a wide variety of traditions including, Theravada, Tibetan traditions, and he also taught physiology and neuroscience.
He wrote the book The Mind Illuminated: A Complete Meditation Guide Using Buddhist Wisdom and Brain Science, which is refreshing in its use of Stages. Many practitioners want to skip to the end of the path and end up slowing their practice down unknowingly. By focusing on stages, the meditator can focus on what they need to master first before moving onto the next stage, and thereby they keep from getting lost.
In this review I’ll focus on some of Culadasa’s insights into how mindfulness works, and the challenges of a wandering mind.

Blog: http://psychreviews.org/zen-haiku-various-authors/
Haiku is the shortest form of poetry. The goal of this poetry is to communicate the poet’s immediate experience. Of course the audience didn’t experience what the poet did, so the trick is how it makes the audience use their memories to fill in the gaps. Each individual reader will have a unique image in response to the same poem.
To get the most out of this experience just absorb yourself in the images that your mind naturally creates from the words…
