The New Mastersounds and Lamar Williams Jr collaborated across continents in the remote recording of “4 Walls.” In light of stay-at-home orders across the world, Willams recalls writing the lyrics while in quarantine at his home in Atlanta, GA staring at the four walls around him and wondering when society will return to normalcy. He ruminates on planning weekends around big shows as both a musician and concertgoer—“we have love for the masses and when we come out of this, we’re going to reflect on our values and look at life a little differently.” Simon Allen laid down some drum ideas in his home of Leeds, UK then passed it to Pete Shand on bass to flesh out some grooves in his home in Spain. Eddie Roberts created an arrangement out of the parts and recorded guitar in Denver, CO at Color Red Studios ready for Lamar to write to. Once the vocals were down, Joe Tatton added the final key layers in the UK. On the production side, Roberts and Williams took queues from Rick James adding layers of delay and reverb over the vocals. This is the first track in a series of remote recordings The New Mastersounds and Lamar Williams Jr plan on releasing in the coming months.

“She Ain’t No Fluffer” by The Handcuffs packs a punch with old school, blues-inspired modern rock ’n roll inspired by greats such as Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple while nodding to modern stars like PJ Harvey and Jack White. The band enlisted their now good friend Morgan Fisher of Mott the Hoople to lend his virtuosity on synthesizers. While Fisher’s work in Mott the Hoople showcases his glorious, glammy “dancehall” piano prowess, his work on “She Ain’t No Fluffer” allows him to veer off and showcase his unabashed virtuosity on the synthesizer playing tasteful parts that soar, yet never take anyway from the other instruments. Thematically, the song covers feminism and femininity; pride and empowerment; strength and sexuality (without judgment), and even enduring friendship—all of it with a clever little wink because none of it has to be mutually exclusive.

Les Jeux Sont Funk takes their fascination with Indian films and adapts the song “Hum Tumhe” from the movie Qurbani in a style of their own. Bandleader Carlo Nardi notes that Bollywood music can absorb several musical styles while still maintaining a distinct musical footprint of its own. He cites music directors like R.D. Burman and Kalyanji-Anandji as masters of their craft who create captivating grooves while drawing upon regional modalities, folk music, and classical traditions. Furthering the concept of blending styles and taking liberties with arrangements, Les Jeux Sont Funk’s rendition of “Hum Tumhe” observes the soprano saxophone and guitar taking the place of the original synthesizer and vocal call-and-response section. The Trento, Italy-based group has garnered international attention receiving an invitation to perform at Arezzo Wave Love Festival which has become an institution in the Italian music scene and has garnered stateside airplay on KCRW (Los Angeles, CA), KNKX (Seattle, WA), and more.

In 2019, four stalwarts of the New Orleans music scene, George Gekas (The Revivalists), Alvin Ford Jr. (Ed O'Brien (EOB), PJ Morton, Raphael Saadiq, Pretty Lights Live), Paul Provosty (Lembo, Deltaphonic), and Andriu Yanovski (Boodie T.rio, Cha Wa), had an impromptu gig at The Maple Leaf in New Orleans, all called upon by Gekas. The chemistry was so undeniable, they took it to the studio and formed Pocket Protection. Today, the instrumental groove outfit releases their debut EP Volume 1 out via Color Red.
The playful song titles and nature of the project itself showcase both the individual talents of each band member while serving the greater good of the music. “We relied on intuition and each other to continue to move the music forward. It felt right when we first performed together, made sense in the studio, and will continue to as a collective idea,” says Gekas of the project.

Release Description:
Cecil Moses & The SGs throw it back to digging up old school funk and soul 45s and spin it in a modern light in “Superhero’s Delight.” Drummer Oli Klomp was summoned by the muse that beckoned the melody and guitar line. The rhythm section filled out a complementary pocket and the combination makes for alluring melodies and dance-worthy riffs. The tune represents the West Seattle music scene at its finest and is part of a long-standing relationship with Color Red’s network in the Pacific Northwest.
“Westside Boogaloo” explores the 60s boogaloo soul-inspired side of Cecil Moses & The SGs. The track was effortlessly constructed through collaboration with Oli Klomp bringing in a tom-tom-based drum grove, Marc Hager & Colin Higgins hashing out the chord progression and melody, and Bobby Heinemann putting the icing on the cake with a boogaloo bass line. It is the perfect juxtaposition from the 45s A side “Superhero’s Delight.” Once you finish the record, you will see the direct influence from Booker T & The MGs and instrumental soul from all over the world.

Elephant Wrecking Ball puts a personal touch on the Danny Elfman classic, “This is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. At the suggestion of their longtime friend, collage artist, and avid Nightmare Before Christmas fan, Curtis Bergesen, the group decided to take the live fan-favorite to the studio to record and release prior to Halloween 2021. The trio of Scott Flynn (trombone), Dan Africano (bass), and Neal Evans (drums) furthers their explorations in jazz, hip-hop, and electronica with a hard-driving rhythm section and haunting horn leads & effects to pay tribute to Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King and the Patron Spirit of Halloween.

Backbeat Underground enters a parallel universe to reimagine the Grateful Dead classic “Sugaree” with an early 70s, analog soul flair. Bandleader Satya Thallam paints a vivid narrative where the Dead return from their 1972 European tour and instead of pursuing a solo album, Jerry insists the band veer off and swing through Muscle Shoals for a session with the Swampers. In this session, they give the 12/8 folk-like classic a fresh coat of paint with a 4/4 soulful groove lathered in horns. To bring his vision to life, the band enlisted DC vocal legend Joe Quarterman to make the tune rich with Alabama flavor. Backbeat Underground entered Color Red’s orbit while sharing the stage with The New Mastersounds and Matador! Soul Sounds during their east coast appearances. The group collaborated with Eddie Roberts to bring the reincarnated version of the classic tune to the music platform and put it on display for heads and funk lovers alike.
