Health Secretary Matt Hancock yesterday announced severe penalties for those not complying with the new border quarantine arrangements, including a 10 year prison term for lying about where you have travelled from. How much further can these draconian measures go before the public relent?

When it comes to solutions, all the focus has so far gone on one key medical intervention. But we've already seen on the Pandemic Podcast that there could be others.
My guest today is Patrick Holford who is campaigning for a simpler, proven, potentially more cost-effective solution, one that we all have unlimited access to if we choose to incorporate it into our lives.
If this comes across as coded language then we have to take it as a sign of the times that a reference to nature’s capacity to heal is considered controversial.
Patrick Holford is a leading spokesman on nutrition and health and founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition. He is the author of 45 books, translated into more than 30 languages, including The Optimum Nutrition Bible, and, most recently, Flu Fighters.
We will be exploring these themes in the context of our current situation and considering a path we could be choosing compared to the one we’re going down, with its many attendant implications.

As more of us start questioning the narrative that’s been driving our lives for what’s starting to feel like forever, the concept of peaceful protest as a means of standing up for our rights is fast gaining momentum.
Among those leading the way are the brains behind A Stand in the Park, launched just a few months ago and already adopted in more than 450 locations across the world, including at a growing number of green spaces in the UK.
A Stand in the Park is rapidly becoming a magnet every Sunday between 10am and 11am for those of us who have simply had enough and want to come together to stand for ‘unity, freedom, and personal truth’. No leaflets, no slogans, nothing to provoke any kind of a response, just literally standing in a park.

In 2016 the Government ran a simulation called Exercise Cygnus to evaluate how well the UK could handle a hypothetical respiratory pandemic. The results were so ‘terrifying’ that Whitehall attempted to not just bury the report’s findings but sue any newspaper that tried to run the story.
Exercise Cygnus participants included the then health secretary Jeremy Hunt and 950 other Government officials who were collectively tasked with managing the simulated pandemic and theoretically saving lives. Their decisions and overall strategy were however based on outdated and poorly-planned policies, which resulted in ventilators being switched off, hospital patients being moved into care homes, and bodies piling up for mass burial.
My guest today is Dr Lee Jones, a reader in International Politics at Queen Mary University in London and a member of the Health Advisory and Recovery Team (HART). He has openly criticised the Government for a Covid response that led to the UK having higher than average numbers of deaths despite the sixth toughest lockdown strategy in the world.
Dr Jones has written extensively on the management of transnational problems including pandemic disease in his book Governing Borderless Threats: Non-Traditional Security and the Politics of State Transformation. He asserts that the UK is a ‘failed regulatory state’, another reason the Government responded so badly to the Covid-19 challenge. He also believes that if the Government had addressed even a few of the failings raised in the Cygnus report, which was eventually published in 2020, things could have been very different.

Just as we in the UK were beginning to enjoy ‘new’ freedoms, we’re now being presented with a fresh threat — from India this time — and yet another apparent example of how things can get very bad, very quickly.
In this episode we’ll be taking a more detailed look at some of the statistics, together with reports coming out of India that appear to somewhat go against the grain of the mainstream narrative we’re being presented with.
Looking at the whole picture, including the background to this recent apparent upturn in cases, I’ll be questioning whether India’s current experience is a dire warning we all need to pay attention to and asking whether could it be preparing the ground for potentially another round of lockdowns closer to home?
OR are there some simpler, less alarming, explanations? As always, there’s much more happening behind the statistics and headlines than it seems at first glance - whatever is happening, my heart goes out to all those who are suffering.
