Ep. 5166 – Doug Bandow: America Wrecked Libya for a Generation – 1/17/2020
Doug Bandow talks about the legacy of the war in Libya, which many Americans seem already to have forgotten. Bandow says Qaddafi was supposed to be the test case for a dictator agreeing to U.S. terms of peaceful nuclear disarmament. Instead, as soon as he disarmed America sent troops in to overthrow him, creating an obvious chilling effect on any country of whom we make similar demands in the future. Bandow also reminds us of the blowback caused by the war there, and fears for the possibility of Yemeni terrorism against U.S. targets in the future, since what America is doing to the Yemenis is far worse even than what happened to the Libyans.
Doug Bandow is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and a regular contributor at Forbes Magazine, the National Interest, and elsewhere. He’s on Twitter @Doug_Bandow.

Nasser Arrabyee comes back for an update on the war in Yemen. Saudi forces continue to bomb Yemeni cities, and American neocons continue to insist that the war is being justly prosecuted against the Iran-backed Houthis. Arrabyee says these claims of Iranian support are overblown. As usual, the American media ignores most of the history and nuances of the war altogether.
Nasser Arrabyee is a Yemeni journalist based in Sana’a, Yemen. He is the owner and director of yemen-now.com. You can follow him on Twitter @narrabyee.

Trita Parsi, president of the National Iranian American Council, discusses NIAC’s report on why sanctions on Iran aren’t working; how Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been backed into a political corner where he can’t make concessions; why the US doesn’t need a “Nixon goes to China” diplomatic breakthrough (as advocated by Flynt and Hillary Mann Leverett) to avert war; and how the US’s all stick, no carrot sanctions policy has given influential Iranians little incentive to push for change.

Joe Dyke from Airwars.org joins the show to discuss his new report, coauthored with Imogen Piper, which attempts to count civilian deaths resulting directly from U.S. airstrikes during the Terror Wars. Dyke says he and his colleagues want civilian deaths to be part of the broader ongoing discussions about the cost of these wars. Scott and Dyke discuss the difficulties involved with trying to count civilian deaths and examine the costs and benefits of different methods. Both agree, regardless of method, it’s important work. Especially since the U.S. government has made no official estimates.

Scott is joined by Jeremy Hammond to talk about the war in Gaza. They discuss Israel’s strategy of making Gaza uninhabitable and look at the relevant history that has led to this moment. They also discuss the proper language to use when talking about the conflict. Hammond argues that what Israel is currently doing meets the definition of a genocide and that people shouldn’t shy away from using that word.
