An old Chilton earth leakage circuit breaker is taken apart. This is a type E, current operated, 500mA trip current. Contacts rated 60A. Internally this is similar to the typical textbook model RCD, with substantial copper windings around a ferrite or similar core, and a smaller sense coil. This one has a fourth coil which creates a magnetic field when the test button is pressed, the resistor limiting the current through the coil. This is probably because of the high power required for a 500mA test current - a resistor directly between L&N with 500mA at 240V would be an impractical 120 watts.
