Introduction

Erwachen was composed in 2007, commissioned by the Goethe Institute Brussels for its 50th anniversary, in collaboration with BOZAR - Centre for Fine Arts and the musikFabrik. The world première took place on October 13th 2009 at the Saal Henry Le Boeuf in Brussels with Dirk Wietheger (violoncello), Marco Blaauw (trumpet) and Marcus Weiss (soprano saxophone).

Performance Practice

Erwachen is not conducted. The performers synchronize themselves. At the beginning - after the hall lights have been faded out - the stage lights are faded in. The, the three instrumentalists enter one after the other in close succession from different directions, holding their instruments with both hands. They position themselves on the stage in a large triangle, with the violincello at the front left, the trumpet in the rear middle, and the soprano saxophone at the front right, as seen from the audience.

In large halls, it is recommended to amplify the instruments. A sound projectionist in the middle of the hall controls the balance of the players. For the sound projection, 2 x 2 loudspeakers are placed at least 4.5 meters high at the left and the rigth of the stage if the floor of the auditorum is level. If there are balconies, or if the seats of the hall rise towards the rear (ampitheatre) then the loudspeakers should be higher.

The sound should always come from the positions of the musicians (locate using panpots). The loudspeakers should not be tipped downwards. The amplified sound should give a rather indirect impression due to the reflections of the hall.

The violoncello can be amplified using a normal microphone on a low stand. For the passages in which all musicians are to speak, the voice of the cellist should also be amplified using a transmitter microphone fastened above his or her ear. The microphone for the trumpet is held to the side in front of the bell by a special mount attached to the instrument. The microphone for the soprano saxophone is attached to the clothing at the upper left.

The colour of the 12th Hour of KLANG is HKS 3. The musicians should be dressed in this colour.
