The Best Way To Achieve Escape Velocity In Kerbal Space Program
Many people build rockets purely with the intention of getting higher and faster, they go straight up until they run out of fuel. As it turns out, this is not always the best way to go highest and fastest. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClsTnYsR5MU
Privately developed launch vehicles are not a recent development, back in the early 1980's private investors developed the Conestoga launch vehicle, however after overcoming technical and legal problems the company was unsuccessful in the launch business but a spin off still operates under the guise of Celestis.

You might not have heard of Masten Space Systems, but they've been hacking on rocket vehicles for over 15 years, they've built many prototypes and flown them on Earth hundreds of times. And while they won the Lunar Landing X-Prize they've never had a vehicle they designed go to space, so it's great to see that NASA has given them a contract to deliver a payload to the Lunar surface in 2022 as part of the CLPS program.

Now that Elite: Dangerous is rewarding explorers with 'Discovered by' tags I wanted to set of on a serious journey of exploration. I headed towards the California Nebula, 1000 light years from Earth, and along the way I scanned every star, catalogued every celestial, and performed surface scans of interesting bodies. This took over 12 hours of gameplay.

Now with new parts I'm trying to document how I go about developing new rocket designs, with a view to putting a 3 Kerbal Capsule on the Mun and returning it to Kerbin safely.

The Mars Science Laboratory has been on Mars since 2012, and has travelled 20km across the surface, inside Gale crater looking for clues to the history of the region which is well suited to unravelling the history of Mars as a whole. I wanted to use a few different tools to give you an idea of where the rover is, and how it got there.
Or rather I've been messing with this stuff for the last week and really wanted to make a video of the bits and pieces I have.
Here's the official tool showing the map and allowing a few sites to be inspected in 3D

In 1969 Neil Armstrong announced a safe touchdown on the moon with the words 'The Eagle has Landed'. "Eagle" was the name of the Lunar Module, the spacecraft which carried Neil and Buzz to the surface of the moon. After they walked on the surface of the moon they flew the Eagle back into orbit, docked with the Columbia command module and undocked the Eagle, leaving it in orbit while Columbia returned to Earth.
Most spacecraft in lunar orbit suffer from instability in their orbits due to the 'lumpy' nature of the lunar gravity which tends to cause the orbits to eventually get so elliptical that they hit the moon.
However, an amateur space fan wanted to narrow down the possible impact location and used orbit modelling software to propagate the orbit forwards in time until it hit the moon. He was surprised to find that it didn't hit the moon, and remained in a stable orbit for decades, this suggests that the Eagle may still be orbiting the moon over 5 decades after being left there.

I've been on a trip to London this weekend for the Frontier Expo, a convention organized by Frontier developments that focused on their games. It was a fantastic weekend, with the event actually covering lots of cool science talks from experts on Astrobiology, Roller coasters and Paleontology.

Lunar Flight was one of the first games to have good VR support for the dev headsets, now that the consumer hardware has been released it's taken a few months but now we have good support and it's as immersive as ever.
