Laura Plancarte is the Director, Producer, and Writer of the film Mexican Dream, which was an Official Selection Premier at Hot Docs 2024 Toronto and also Winner, Best Film, DocsBarcelona 2024. The documentary tells the story of Malena who, after felling an abusive relationship and working as a domestic in Mexico City, struggles to reunite with her teenage children, finish building her dream home, setup her business, and have a child with her new, younger partner while reversing a tubal tying and unedging IVF . Laura and I discuss her goals in creating this film & how she achieved them, how the film speaks to women worldwide facing similar circumstances, the pressure Malena faced to have another child with her boyfriend & how other women and families can relate, how her story challenges audiences to see a different side of Mexican woman who come from poverty while breaking stereotypes & sheds light on the complexities of femineity, motherhood, and Mexico’s unjust social structure, and the importance of all Latinas represented in film. .
