On September 2nd, 1862, the Maryland Campaign officially begins with the first cavalry skirmish at Mile Hill north of Leesburg. Over the next few days, Confederate divisions of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia start making their way into the town. From September 4th - 6th, the army crosses the Potomac River at White's Ford, entering Maryland to begin Lee's first invasion of the North. Lee is hoping that McClellan's overcautious nature will give him at least a week's head start on the Union Army of the Potomac still in Washington. Still, by the 4th, McClellan has reorganized the army and set it on the march to meet Lee's forces in Western Maryland. Lee's troops occupy Frederick, where the General plans to deal with the Union garrisons at Harpers Ferry and Martinsburg, labeled Special Order No. 191. This document, now famous as the "Lost Order," will come into the hands of General McClellan, who will famously remark, "Here is a paper with which, if I cannot whip Bobby Lee, I will be willing to go home." But will McClellan's information coup be enough for the General to defeat Lee and his Confederates as they march out of Frederick through the passes of South Mountain?

After Stonewall Jackson's victory over the small force of Federals at the Battle of McDowell on May 8th, 1862, the Valley District commander moves his forces north up the Shenandoah Valley to confront the Union Department of the Shenandoah under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, stationed around Winchester. Sidestepping the direct route up the Valley Turnpike towards the city, Jackson opts instead to move through the adjacent Luray Valley and attack Winchester from that direction. Guarding Front Royal is a small Union garrison of about 1,000 men under Colonel John R. Kenly of the Federal 1st Maryland Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Jackson's dashing strike against Front Royal on May 23rd takes the small garrison by surprise. The Confederates will have to clear the Federals out of Front Royal if they are to press on towards Winchester.

Despite the unexpected attack by McClellan against the outer works of Richmond at Oak Grove on June 25th, General Robert E. Lee believes that his counter-offensive plan has not been uncovered, and so on Thursday, June 26th, 1862, begins his attack against the Union Army of the Potomac's right flank north of the Chickahominy River. Lee plans to use Stonewall Jackson's Command and A. P. Hill's Light Division to attack the forces of Major General Fitz John Porter's V Corps dug in along Beaver Dam Creek near Mechanicsville. However, much to Lee's frustration, most of his carefully-laid plans go awry from the start. Jackson's Command gets lost in its march towards Mechanicsville, and A. P. Hill is left waiting under artillery fire. By late afternoon, A. P. Hill impatiently launches his division against the entrenched Federals behind Beaver Dam Creek, leading to a bloody repulse that evening in the second of the Seven Days Battles.

Following the inconclusive Battle of Williamsburg, General Johnston's forces continue their withdraw up the Virginia Peninsula towards the outer defenses of Richmond. Intending to cut off Johnston's line of retreat, McClellan orders recently-arrived Brigadier General William B. Franklin and his division of I Corps to re-embark on their troop ships and steam up the York River and make a landing that block Johnston's escape route. However, as Franklin's troops begin landing near the Eltham Plantation, they soon become engaged in a heavy skirmish with Confederate reserve troops of Brigadier General William H. C. Whiting's Division - spearheaded by Brigadier General John Bell Hood's Texas Brigade. This skirmish would prove to be the first of many battles to come for Hood's Texans as they engage Franklin's Federals in the Battle of Eltham's Landing.

After the Confederates invade the neutral border state of Kentucky in September of 1861, they begin to consolidate a foothold in the southern regions of the Blue Grass State. In January of 1862, a Confederate force from the District of East Tennessee, operating in the Cumberland Gap in Eastern Kentucky, launches an offensive in the region against local Union forces. In response, Brigadier General George Henry Thomas and a division of Federals from the Army of the Ohio are dispatched to meet this threat, and the two forces collide near Mill Springs and Logan’s Cross Roads in one of the first major battles of 1862.

Suffering numerous setbacks in the West, the Confederates from the newly-formed Army of Mississippi, led by the able General Albert Sidney Johnston, attempt a counter-strike against Major General Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee while it is encamped at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. The fate of the Western Theater hangs in the balance. If Johnston's army can destroy Grant's forces before he is reinforced by the Army of the Ohio under Major General Don Carlos Buell, he can turn around the misfortunes in the West. However, if Johnston's army is defeated, there will be nothing stopping the Union from securing a firm control over the region. On the eve of battle, Johnston and his generals wait intensely for the bloodbath that will soon ensue around a small log cabin church known as Shiloh...

In the early summer of 1862, the Union Army and Navy set their sights on the city of Memphis in Southwest Tennessee as their next major target on the Mississippi River in order to carry out their gradual stranglehold over the mighty river as part of the Anaconda Plan. For the advance on Memphis, the Union Navy plans on sending out Flag Officer Charles H. Davis' Western Flotilla to seize the city via the river itself. For this mission, the Western Flotilla is reinforced by a peculiar flotilla of repurposed civilian steamboat vessels led by Colonel Charles Ellet - the U.S. Ram Fleet. Meanwhile, the Confederate Navy's River Defense Fleet is moving towards Memphis to defend the strategically-vital river city, one of the last major strongholds on the upper Mississippi River. If Memphis falls to the Union, it will open the way for a Federal advance towards the city of Vicksburg in Mississippi.

The Battle of Shiloh begins as General Albert Sidney Johnston's Army of Mississippi launches its general attack on Major General Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee encamped along Pittsburg Landing. The first day of the battle turns into a bloodbath for both sides, as the Confederates take Grant's forces by surprise and push them back from their encampments, ultimately towards Pittsburg Landing itself. But the Union does not withdraw without a fight. Staggering losses on both sides ensue in this back-and-forth battle in the woods of southwestern Tennessee. The fate of the Western Theater heavily relies on the outcome of this battle.

As the American Civil War reached new heights with the Northern Virginia Campaign, the North would find itself fighting not just in the South against the Confederacy, but on its own frontiers. The failure of the Federal Government to tend to matters with the Dakota-Sioux would result in the bloodiest ethnic conflict in American History.
