Hauser's law shows that the total tax stays relatively the same regardless of what the top marginal tax rate is...if you consider it as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP). This shatters the myth of higher taxes bringing in higher tax revenues. Knowing Hauser's law disarms politicians like Bernie Sanders' and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's platform of creating prosperity for the poor by raising taxes on the rich. Bernie oftentimes mentions that we had an income tax above 90% at one time in this country. What he fails to realize (or ignore) is that the tax revenue stayed about the same because people just dodged the tax. In essence, the 90% tax in the 1950s didn't mean anything because very few people paid it, and when they did they didn't pay it on much of their income.
