Deputies had done all they could Friday to calm 39-year-old Juan Torres outside his family's home in suburban Buckeye, Sheriff Paul Penzone said. However, Torres refused to drop the wrench and a ball-peen hammer, and officers fired their guns after he hurled a wrench at one officer who ducked but was still struck in the back of his neck, the sheriff said. Just after midnight Saturday, two deputies are confronted by Juan Torres, 39, seen on body cameras with a hammer and a wrench. Torres is also overheard telling deputies to shoot him as his family pleads with him to put the tools down so he can get help. "My perspective on what I've seen here I think that the deputies were in a position where they had no other choice but to respond with deadly force and protect themselves," said Sheriff Paul Penzone. Sheriff Paul Penzone says the case is still under investigation but believes his deputies followed correct protocol, once Torres threw a four-pound wrench. "I need sheriffs out here now my brother is trying to hurt us I need sheriffs out here now," Vanessa Torres could be heard saying on the 911 call. "I was the one who made the 911 call," said Vanessa Torres, the victim's sister. Family members say they feel guilty. Even though deputies had been to their home before, this time they believe Torres was truly having a mental breakdown before deputies fired 11 gunshots. Torres was hit seven times. "Treated him like an animal, that's how you kill a bear or something, 10 shots, 11 shots that's not right," said Irma Torres, victim's sister. The father of Juan Torres says law enforcement as a whole needs more training for situations like the one his son died in. "My son didn't have to die, they killed him," said Ricardo Torres, victim's father. "We are not experts in all fields, we are experts in public safety, there are dynamics that are infused into public safety that continue to grow and expand and out deputies and officers throughout the community and throughout the nation are expected to all of a sudden address and handle all these things effectively, that's unrealistic," said Sheriff Penzone. Sheriff Penzone says Torres had been contacted in the past by law enforcement 22 times, 12 times with deputies specifically. The Torres family plans to file a lawsuit against MCSO. Luna County, NM - On February 4, 2021, New Mexico State Police Officer Darian Jarrott initiated a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet pickup on Interstate 10 eastbound, near mile marker 102 east of Deming, New Mexico. During the traffic stop, Officer Jarrott asked the driver, identified as Omar Felix Cueva, 39, of Deming to exit the vehicle. Cueva exited the driver’s side holding an AR-15-style rifle and fired at least one shot at Officer Jarrott as he was walking to the rear of the vehicle. Officer Jarrott ducked and fell onto his back as Cueva ran around the back of the pickup toward Officer Jarrott. Cueva fired several more rounds at Officer Jarrott who was struck by gunfire and killed. As Cueva ran toward the front of the truck on the passenger’s side, he shot Officer Jarrott point-blank in the back of the head. A Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent arrived on scene and notified New Mexico State Police dispatch that an officer was down. A broadcast was put out to state and local law enforcement agencies. New Mexico State Police Officers Lionel Palomares and Sonny Montes located Cueva traveling east on Interstate 10 near mile marker 116. Cueva pulled over and fired at Officers Palomares and Montes. The officers returned fire at Cueva who continued to evade officers, traveling east on Interstate 10. As Cueva fled eastbound on Interstate 10, law enforcement officers from the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD), the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office (DASO), and U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) assisted New Mexico State Police with the pursuit. Near the Picacho exit on Interstate 10, (near mile marker 135), NMSP officers successfully utilized tire deflation devices on Cueva’s pickup. Cueva continued to flee east on Interstate 10. Various law enforcement officers engaged Cueva in gunfire as he fled. DASO Deputy Jerod Huston fired rounds from his department issued rifle near the mile marker 136. DASO Deputy John Signore fired at Cueva near the mile marker 138 eastbound. Near mile marker 139, USBP Agent Oscar Delgado fired one round at Cueva as he passed. LCPD Officer Adrian De La Garza then utilized a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver near mile marker 140. Prior to the pickup coming to a stop, Cueva exited the pickup armed with a firearm and shot multiple rounds towards the officers and deputies. LCPD Officer Adrian De La Garza and DASO Deputies Diego Herrera and Obed Marte returned fire towards Cueva, who was struck several times by gunfire. Officer De La Garza was struck by gunfire and was airlifted to a trauma hospital in Texas where he was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department released a Critical Incident Video depicting the deputy-involved shooting that occurred in Foothill Ranch, a community located in the city of Lake Forest, Calif., on January 19, 2022. At about 9:40 p.m., deputies responded to the report of “suspicious circumstance at the Walmart on Towne Centre Drive in Foothill Ranch. According to the OCSD, deputies confronted the people suspected of returning items with fraudulent receipts which is when they encountered 30-year-old Ernest Aguilar. The interaction began cordially however, when deputies began to detain Aguilar they spotted a knife and attempted to handcuff the suspect. Aguilar resisted, forcing three deputies and a civilian to wrestle him down. During the struggle, Aguilar brandished a handgun. A civilian warned authorities that Aguilar was armed after which deputies fired and struck the 30-year-old in the head. He was transported to the hospital and survived. Aguilar has since been moved to jail and charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and possession of a gun missing a serial number. Aguilar also had outstanding warrants at the time of the shooting. Deters announced that no charges will be filed against the officers in the July 31st officer- involved shooting on Geyer Woods Lane in Westwood. On July 31st at approximately 10:30 a.m. Robert Schneider 46 (DOB 10/21/72) robbed the Marathon Station located at 6050 Cheviot Road at gunpoint. A car chase ensued with numerous police agencies, including the Hamilton County Sheriff’s department helicopter, attempting to stop Schneider’s vehicle. Schneider eventually stopped his car and fled from the police on foot. Schneider ran through a residential neighborhood brandishing a handgun and pointing it directly at police officers. He tried unsuccessfully to enter a residence. He then ran across the street and tried to gain entrance, again unsuccessfully, to another home located at the end of Geyer Woods Lane. The female homeowner struggled with Schneider at the door but was able to keep her door closed and prevent him from gaining entry. P.O. Timothy Bittner, Cheviot Police Department, ordered him to drop his gun. Schneider refused his commands and Office Bittner fired one shot at the suspect. P.O. Barbara Aylward, Green Township Police Department, joined the pursuit as Schneider was attempting to gain entrance to the second residence. Aylward fired three shots and Bittner fired one additional shot for a total of five shots fired at Schneider. Schneider was struck in the head and torso. Schneider’s gun was still in his hand when the officers approached him after he had been shot.
