Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X led the 1960's Civil Rights Movement with such power that their voice continues to ring in our ears today. A voice that preached… “One day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed…that all men are created equal.” — Martin Luther King Jr. And a voice that said… “Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you’re a man, you take it.” — Malcolm X And although they agreed on equal rights as their goal they disagreed on how to achieve it… Malcolm X believed equal rights is best achieved by African Americans building a metaphorical wall around the black community. African Americans should only buy from black businesses, vote for black politicians, and attend black schools. “We don’t go for segregation. We go for separation. Separation is when you have your own. You control your own economy; you control your own politics; you control your own society; you control your own everything. You have yours and you control yours; we have ours and we control ours.” — Malcolm X Martin Luther King had a different dream. He dreamed that the content of one’s character mattered more than the color of ones skin. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” — Martin Luther King Jr. He dreamed that eventually there would be one America. An America where there was no black community nor white community, but only the American community. “We have fought hard and long for integration, as I believe we should have, and I know that we will win.” — Martin Luther King Jr. But 60 years later it seems the Malcolm X separatist approach is winning because we are still so hyper-focused on color. There are several reasons for this… 1. Meaning: In America what it means to be a “community” is disintegrating. Neighbors don’t know neighbors. American pride seems to be at an all-time low. Yet the communities that still feel strong are ethnic communities, such as the black, hispanic, asian, Indian, and muslim communities. A community gives one a deeper sense of meaning and so people still prefer to cling to their well-defined ethnic identity then to let it disintegrate in the interest of integration. 2. Ratings: Division drives ratings more than unity. Instead of acting on where we agree we rather pontificate on where we disagree, which usually just ends up in a debate about semantics, terminology, lingo, and team-signaling. 3. Let's talk about one of the most controversial and misunderstood tragedies in modern American history in the hope that by the end of this video we would have put it into some context and gotten a little closer to the truth. So let us begin... Charlottesville, is how Joe Biden began his presidential announcement... “Charlottesville, Virginia is home to the author of one of the great documents in human history. We know it by heart. We hold these truths to be self-evident. That all men are created equal endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” Quoting Tommy J. is always a good start, but then Biden takes a drastic left turn… “Charlottesville is also home to a defining moment for this nation in the last few years. It was there on August of 2017 we saw Klansmen and white supremacists and neo-Nazis come out in the open. Their crazed faces, illuminated by torches, veins bulging and bearing the fangs of racism. Chanting the same anti-Semitic bile heard across Europe in the thirties. And they were met by a courageous group of Americans. And a violent clash ensued. And a brave young woman lost her life.” All of this happened! There’s without a doubt white supremacists and Neo-Nazi’s still in America and around-the-world. Absolutely no one disputes this, but what I do dispute is that this was a “defining moment” for my country. It was not! And I can say that because numbers matter. Numbers matter! How many Klansmen/white supremacists/Neo-Nazi’s were at this protest? There were 25 - 250 protestors. In a nation of 400 million people is it that surprising you could find 250 racists? So If anything couldn’t you therefore make the argument that their low-turnout + the higher-turnout of over 1000 counter-protestors is an example of why America is NOT racist? Just compare the protestor-turnout to 1950s America and you’ll see how far we’ve come as a country. Those 250 people came from all over America AND Canada whereas if you go back to 1950 you could just walk down the block and probably find 250 people willing to carry torches and even dress up for the occasion. We also have to consider… how many people died? 1 person died at the hands of 1 person. That's 1 person too many, but just imagine if President Obama was expected to disavow gangs every time a black teenager was gunned down in the streets of his home city of Chicago? What makes Charlottesville a “defining moment”, but not those tragedies?
