Critics of Islam clam that the Islamic name for god is Allah, and this name derives from a pagan Moon god in local Arabic mythology. In addition, the Quran clearly emphasizes that the moon is a sign of God (of Islam). The Quran speaks about the crescent moon in 50 verses. "Allah" is from the compound Arabic word "al-ilah" or in english "the god". Allah was known before Muhammad's time without a doubt. The name has been found in pre-islamic writings and other archeological finds. At the Kabah in Mecca over 350 gods were worshipped, but it was built especially for the chief deity - the moon god. Allah was the personal title of the moon god. The crescent moon symbol of Arabia came from this god. Muhammad adopted the worship of Allah. As far as when the Crescent Moon was FIRST used as a symbol of worship Historians differ in their explanation. Some say Sabeans, or Persians empire and others say the Greeks, Byzantine, Turks or Ottoman Empire.
