We've been raising alpacas since 2008 and there are 2 inexpensive items that have been huge life and money savers for us. I have a blog post with a cute pin image at the link below:
I shear all of my Suri alpacas by hand with lots of love and respect. Tiffany is one of our Suri alpacas in my herd :) I was able to get really good hand shearing angles on this one- so this is a great one to watch first. She ended up being really cooperative and I was able to finish most of her body except the upper neck part!
If you want some washed fleeces from our herd, please support our farm at my Etsy store :) https://www.etsy.com/shop/WisteriaSuriRanch
I have taken a traditional shearing training course and have shorn with electric shearers and ground restraints. I have also used a rotating table. My alpacas tolerated this as we talked them through everything and did it as gently as we could. But there were many drawbacks. This method requires 3 adults familiar with working with alpacas and it can be dangerous if the alpacas are stressed out. It's also very hard on your back... I needed an easier better way to shear my beloved alpacas myself :)
I prefer hand shearing with them standing as I can do this by myself and do this very gently. I greatly enjoy the time I spend with them as I shear. You can watch how I work with different alpacas as their personalities differ and also what they tolerate.
I'd love for more people to know that alpacas can be shorn in this gentle manner- although it does take patience, time and effort to develop trust with the animals. Please like this video to help more people see this and share it with other animal lovers and fiber artists if you feel this way, too. Thank you!

Quick and easy how to dye alpaca wool yarn with kool-aid- I wanted to see if I could dye yarn into a few different colors with minimal effort. I usually prepare all the colors in a squirt bottle and lay the yarn flat and go through a longer more tedious process to create colorful yarn, but I wanted something quick today! Hope you get some great ideas and enjoy this video! Time to knit another super fun hat with the knifty knitter- don't forget to check out my knifty knitter hat tutorial.
