Author: Nicolai J. Foss File Type: pdf While there are many books on knowledge management, knowledge governance is a concept that has not been so well explored, and is much less understood. Knowledge governance refers to choosing structures and mechanisms that can influence the processes of sharing and creating knowledge. The book argues that knowledge governance is a distinct issue in management and organization because knowledge processes differ on several dimensions from routine and more traditional processes. The relationship between governance issues and knowledge processes is under-researched, theoretically as well as empirically. Thematically, knowledge governance cuts across fields such as general management, human resource management, the management of intellectual capital, innovation theory, strategic management, technology strategy, and international business. Not surprisingly, existing ideas are developed from the perspectives of different fields and from different underlying disciplinary foundations however, it often remains unclear how these ideas relate together and how they differ in terms of unit of analysis, mode of analysis, underlying logic and assumptions, etc. This book is an important step towards overcoming the existing fragmentation in the field by providing a multi-disciplinary collection of chapters on knowledge governance. While the single chapters accentuate the pluralism in the field, they all examine issues that constitute the essence of knowledge governance.About the AuthorNicolai J Foss is Professor of Economic Organization at the Copenhagen Business School and the Director of the Center for Strategic Management and Globalization at the CBS. In this studyDr. Gregory examineshow Diderot borrowed from Lucretius, Buffon, Maupertuis, and probability theory, and combined ideas from these sources in an innovative fashion to hypothesize that species are mutable and that all life arose randomly from a single prototype. About the AuthorMaryGregory is a scholar of the French Enlightenment. For the past ten years she has been researching Diderots views regarding the metamorphosis of species in four of his texts, namely, the Pensees philosophiques (1746), the Lettre sur les aveugles a lusage de ceux qui voient (1749), the Pensees sur linterpretation de la nature (1753), and the trilogy, the Entretien entre dAlembert et Diderot (1769), the Reve de dAlembert (1769), and the Suite de lEntretien (1769).

Was Hobbes the first great architect of modern political philosophy? Highly critical of the classical tradition in philosophy, particularly Aristotle, Hobbes thought that he had established a new science of morality and politics. Devin Stauffer here delves into Hobbess critique of the classical tradition, making this oft-neglected aspect of the philosophers thought the basis of a new, comprehensive interpretation of his political philosophy. In Hobbess Kingdom of Light, Stauffer argues that Hobbes was engaged in a struggle on multiple fronts against forces, both philosophic and religious, that he thought had long distorted philosophy and destroyed the prospects of a lasting peace in politics. By exploring the twists and turns of Hobbess arguments, not only in his famous Leviathan but throughout his corpus, Stauffer uncovers the details of Hobbess critique of an older outlook, rooted in classical philosophy and Christian theology, and reveals the complexity of Hobbess war against the Kingdom of Darkness. He also describes the key features of the new outlookthe Kingdom of Lightthat Hobbes sought to put in its place. Hobbess venture helped to prepare the way for the later emergence of modern liberalism and modern secularism. Hobbess Kingdom of Light is a wide-ranging and ambitious exploration of Hobbess thought. **Review A brilliant and sustained reflection on Hobbess philosophic, theological, and political-philosophic attempt to dispel the Kingdom of Darkness. Stauffer clarifies and assesses the arguments that led Hobbes to his extraordinary and highly influential attempt to establish human society on a radically new, enlightened, secular basis. This is a vitally important book, not only for those who wish to understand the true relation between Hobbess natural science and his political science but for anyone who wishes to understand the modern world. He is the author of Platos Introduction to the Question of Justice and The Unity of Platos Gorgias.

Best known for his account of the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides (c. 454c. 395 b.c.) was an Athenian general and historian. This valuable commentary addresses the most famous part of Thucydidess narrative the Sicilian Expedition (books 68.1), which resulted in a major defeat for Athens. Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of Greek, Martha C. Taylors student-friendly text is the first single volume in more than a century to focus on the expedition and the first to include the Melian Dialogue (5.84116), considered the prelude to the invasion. Many beginning readers of Thucydides require assistance with the authors often difficult constructions. In her notes to the text, Taylor breaks down Thucydidess convoluted sentences and explains them piece by piece. Her notes also explain the authors many historical and literary references. In her in-depth introduction, Taylor provides students with all the information they need to begin reading Thucydides. She discusses what we know about the Greek authorand what we do notand she analyzes his unique language and style. To place the Sicilian Expedition in historical context, she summarizes the events leading up to and following the Sicilian Expedition, and she examines important aspects of Athenian democracy, including Thucydidess presentation of the Athenian boule, the citys advisory citizen council. In addition to textual and historical commentary, this volume includes three maps an appendix addressing the epitaph of Perikles (2.65.513), in which Thucydides appears to contradict his later presentation of the Sicilian Expedition source suggestions for student term papers on relevant topics and a general bibliography. Thucydidess Melian Dialogue and Sicilian Expedition is designed for use with the Oxford Classical Text of Thucydides, which is available online. **About the Author Martha C. The Maltese archipelago is a unique barometer for understanding cultural change in the central Mediterranean. Prehistoric people helped reshape the islands economy and when Mediterranean maritime highways were being established, the islands became a significant lure to Phoenician colonists venturing from their Levantine homeland. Punic Malta also sat at the frontline of regional hostilities until it fell to Rome. Preserved in this island setting are signs of peoples endurance and adaptation to each new challenge. This book is the first systematic and up-to-date survey of the islands archaeological evidence from the initial settlers to the archipelagos inclusion into the Roman world (c. 5000 BC-400 AD). Claudia Sagona draws upon old and new discoveries and her analysis covers well-known sites such as the megalithic structures, as well as less familiar locations and discoveries. She interprets the archaeological record to explain changing social and political structures, intriguing ritual practices and cultural contact through several millennia.

From Hannah Adams, born in 1755, to Vicki Ruiz, born in 1955, this book profiles some 200 women historians. Between Hannah Adams, who began compiling historical information while working as a bobbin lace weaver, and Vicki Ruiz, a third generation Chicana hailed for pioneering inclusive multicultural womens history, the reader will encounter women of diverse backgrounds, motivations, and accomplishments. They come from a variety of occupations, including public history, academia, archival work, and popular history writing and a variety of fields, including biography, art history, military history, and history based on issues of region, gender, race, ethnicity, class, or sexuality.Neglected by the very field they have practiced, these women provide compelling and impressive examples of the historian at work. Selection for inclusion in this volume was based primarily on publications, but other criteria were considered as well, including participation in defining a field of study, influence on other historians or related scholars, cross-disciplinary achievements, and contributions to the work of others. Many of the women were firsts, such as Louise Phelps Kellogg, the first woman president of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association (now the OAH), and Mary Frances Berry, the first black woman to become chancellor at a major research university. This book offers contemporary historians, and all readers, the opportunity to explore women historians motivations, accomplishments, and above all, rich legacies.**

[Taleb is] Wall Streets principal dissident. . . . [Fooled By Randomness] is to conventional Wall Street wisdom approximately what Martin Luthers ninety-nine theses were to the Catholic Church.Malcolm Gladwell, *The New Yorker*Finally in paperback, the word-of-mouth sensation that will change the way you think about the markets and the world. This book is about luck more precisely how we perceive luck in our personal and professional experiences. Set against the backdrop of the most conspicuous forum in which luck is mistaken for skillthe world of businessFooled by Randomness is an irreverent, iconoclastic, eye-opening, and endlessly entertaining exploration of one of the least understood forces in all of our lives. From the Trade Paperback edition.Amazon.com ReviewIf the prescriptions for getting rich that are outlined in books such as The Millionaire Next Door and Rich Dad Poor Dad are successful enough to make the books bestsellers, then one must ask, Why arent there more millionaires? In Fooled by Randomness, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a professional trader and mathematics professor, examines what randomness means in business and in life and why human beings are so prone to mistake dumb luck for consummate skill. This eccentric and highly personal exploration of the nature of randomness meanders from the court of Croesus and trading rooms in New York and London to Russian roulette, Monte Carlo engines, and the philosophy of Karl Popper. Part of what makes this book so good is Talebs ability to make seemingly arcane mathematical concepts (at least to this reviewer) entirely relevant in evaluating and understanding everything from the stock market to the success of those millionaires cited in the aforementioned bestsellers. Heres an articulate, wise, and humorous meditation on the nature of success and failure that anyone who wants a little more of the former would do well to consider. Highly recommended. --Harry C. EdwardsFrom Publishers WeeklyIn this look at financial luck, hedge fund manager Taleb (Dynamic Hedging) addresses the apparently irrational movement of money markets around the world. Using his own investing experience and examples of others successes and disappointments, he discusses theories like Monte Carlo math (easy considered cheating by purists) and the concept of Russian roulette. Taleb tells interesting, well-wrought stories about individual behavior While Nero has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams, both personally and intellectually, he is starting to consider himself as having missed a chance somewhere. While serious investors and mathematics enthusiasts will be intrigued, readers looking for practical investment strategies will be disappointed by this rambling intellectual discourse.
