A Family Tree of Roses: Rose Varieties Chart
Here's my attempt to sort out the relationships between the historic rose classes/families. I'm quite open to suggestions on how to improve the chart - or even corrections to the breeding information. I didn't see a chart like this one in my reference books - so I hope I haven't reinvented the wheel!

Many thanks to @UsefulCharts and his tutorial on making charts like this one. I took some liberties, as it turns out roses are a pretty promiscuous lot - so I had to be a little arbitrary in places!

Much is made of their need for refrigeration or high light levels, but in truth the greatest difference you can make to seeding success comes with your choice of seeds! Here I'll go back through the basic conditions, but also recommend what you should be looking for in a seed supplier to help ensure fast, even germination.

Would you call this method deep mulch? No-till raised beds? Just good old-fashioned top-down soil amendment? Whatever you want to call it, a deep layer of bulk organic (mainly composted wood material) allowed us to overcome the difficulties of our heavy, crusted soil to established this long mixed border in less than one year. Visitors to the farms have commented "well you must have a pretty good soil to begin with!" - then I show them the exposed area. Dry, cracked, lacking organic matter. On its own, it's a difficult surface for new plants to overcome (especially in the dry season). Mulch moderates the moisture, temperature, and gives young roots a foothold in the garden.

Come on an add to the list: Epsom salts, banana peels, rusty nails, egg shells, vinegar, raw fish, coffee grounds, biochar, aerated tea - do the magical-sounding claims around these garden amendments make any sense at all? In my view, beginning gardeners are often misled into focusing on a "miracle cure" rather than basic proven horticultural techniques. I don't like to play the debunker, but here are a couple of Youtubers who are pretty good at it:
