***"R.E.M."*** was an American rock band from ***[Athens, Georgia](https://cutt.ly/NmRkghQ)***, formed in 1980 by drummer ***[Bill Berry](https://cutt.ly/AmRklXQ)***, guitarist ***[Peter Buck](https://cutt.ly/ymRkcq5)***, bassist ***[Mike Mills](https://cutt.ly/CmRknrO)***, and lead vocalist ***[Michael Stipe](https://cutt.ly/lmRkQn5)***, who were students at the University of Georgia.
Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern.
While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, ***"R.E.M."*** brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. The band marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock, and inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.
While ***"[Fables of the Reconstruction](https://cutt.ly/OmPIZq5)"*** was intentionally murky, producer ***[Don Gehman](https://cutt.ly/rmOzhqy)***, constructed their next album,***"Lifes Rich Pageant"*** as its polar opposite. Where previous records kept the rhythm section in the background, ***"Pageant"*** emphasizes the beat, and the band turns in its hardest rockers to date.
The ecologically conscious ***"Fall on Me"*** and a cover of the ***"[Clique's](https://cutt.ly/zmObLma)"*** ***"[Superman](https://cutt.ly/rmAAxUB)"***, sung by bassist ***Mike Mills***, were the only singles released from the album.
The band sound more contemporary both musically and lyrically than they did on either ***Fables*** or ***[Murmur](https://cutt.ly/6mPIH1l)***, which helps give the record an extra kick. ***”R.E.M.”*** also shows that they can be a straight ahead rock band with the powerhouse rhythm section of ***Mills/Buck*** and ***Peter Buck*** who effortless changes between jangling guitar solos and riff rocking power chords.
***”The Flowers Of Guatemala”*** is the seventh song on the band’s fourth studio album ***"[Lifes Rich Pageant](https://cutt.ly/WmPIXWX)"***, released on July 28, 1986. under the ***”[I.R.S. Records](https://cutt.ly/rmRk1BH)”***.

***"The Cranberries"*** were an Irish rock band formed in Limerick, Ireland. Originally named the ***"Cranberry Saw Us"***, the band formed in 1989 by lead singer Niall Quinn, guitarist ***[Noel Hogan](https://cutt.ly/mvPT5VJ)***, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. Quinn was replaced as lead singer by ***[Dolores O'Riordan](https://cutt.ly/nvPYv31)*** in 1990, and they changed their name to the ***"Cranberries"***.
Then, they performed their first UK tour opening for the British band ***”Moose”*** throughout a series of three weeks. “***The Cranberries***” received more letters expressing interest from ***Virgin***, ***EMI***, ***Imago***, ***CBS***, and ***Warner***, which led Hogan brothers to quit their jobs.
***”The Cranberries”*** headed back into the studio in Dublin in March 1992 to restart working on their first LP with ***[Stephen Street](https://cutt.ly/8vSpqEg)***, who had previously worked with the ***Smiths***.
***"Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?"*** is the Cranberries debut studio album released on 1 March 1993 after four EPs.
O'Riordan herself offers up a number of romantic ponderings and considerations lyrically (as well as playing perfectly fine acoustic guitar), and her undisputed vocal ability suits the material perfectly. The two best cuts were the deserved smashes: ***"Dreams"*** a brisk, charging number combining low-key tension and full-on rock, and the melancholic, string-swept break-up song ***"Linger"***.
***”Everyone Else is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?”*** captured a fledgling band at their best, refreshingly free of the bombast, bluster and harshness of some of their later work, and weaving soft and subtle sonic spells.

# ***The Charlatans Biography***
***"The Charlatans"*** are an English rock band formed in the **[West Midlands](https://cutt.ly/NIvCiHx)** in 1988 by bassist ***[Martin Blunt](https://cutt.ly/9IvCmt0)***, who recruited fellow West Midlanders ***[Rob Collins](https://cutt.ly/NIvCItb)*** (keyboards), ***[Jon Brookes](https://cutt.ly/wIvCJVe)*** (drums), Jon Day (guitar) and singer-guitarist ***Baz Ketley***. ***Ketley*** left the band and was replaced by singer ***[Tim Burgess](https://cutt.ly/pIvX8R9)***.
Although the ***Charlatans*** would later become popularly associated with the *[Madchester scene](https://cutt.ly/YIb7ZuY)*, the band's early demos recorded in 1988 in *Birmingham* and *Dudley* already evidenced the sound that the band ultimately became famous for, dominated by ***Collins*** *Hammond organ*.
With their fusion of 1960s *soul*, *R&B* and *garage rock*, the band saw themselves firmly in the West Midlands tradition that included Birmingham bands ***[The Spencer Davis Group](https://cutt.ly/EIvVvS7)*** and early ***[Dexys Midnight Runners](https://cutt.ly/UIvVQUl)***.
> The band’s fifth studio album, ***“Tellin' Stories”*** should have been triumphant, but tragedy struck midway through its recording, when keyboardist ***Rob Collins*** was killed in a car accident. He was an integral part of the band's lineup, creating a distinctive, swirling, neo-psychedelic sound, so ***[Primal Scream's Martin Duffy](https://cutt.ly/uIbS6EZ)*** volunteered to help the band complete the album, which was basically written before ***Collins'*** death.
> That might explain why there are no overt references to his absence anywhere on the album.
> Instead, ***“Tellin' Stories”*** is another collection of classicist *rock & roll* spiked with dance beats, much like any other ***Charlatans*** album.
>
> Where its predecessor was more informed by mechanized beats, the rhythms are more organic, which perfectly suits the rolling ***["North Country Boy"](https://cutt.ly/uIbq5Hz)*** the sweeping ***["One to Another"](https://cutt.ly/fIbwtJs)*** and the heart-tugging ***["How Can You Leave Us?"](https://cutt.ly/RIbwaho)***.
>
> On the whole, however, ***“Tellin' Stories”*** is more consistent than their earlier records, and the best songs showcase the band at its strongest, which is quite an achievement considering the traumas the ***Charlatans*** underwent during its recording. More than anything, that's a fitting salute to ***Collins***.
