Red Sky at Noon Life's Boon? An Examination of Red Dwarfs - Eric McLaughlin
Throughout the Milky Way Galaxy there are a myriad of stars which are much smaller and cooler than the Sun. Recent studies have suggested that many of those small red colored stars may harbor planets in regions where liquid water could potentially exist on their surfaces. Thus, we ask: could life be present on planets around these so called red dwarf stars or will the temperament of these stars render these worlds uninhabitable?

Prostitution and drug use. Glorified gangsters. Savage monsters and unpunished villains. During the mid-20th century, many Hollywood moviemakers defiantly ignored the strict “Production Code” guidelines created in 1930, which were supposed to keep movies morally “clean.” In this three-week series, hosted by documentarian Steven C. Smith, we’ll hear the fascinating story of how Hollywood censorship began, in the wake of Jazz Age scandals, and find out what brought the era to an end.
After viewing highlights from classic movies that ignored the Production Code, we’ll see a complete feature that is now considered one of the most Code-flouting (and fun) films of the time: 1932’s Three on a Match, co-starring Bette Davis—a movie that packs adultery, drug addiction, kidnapping, and other cinematic sins into just 63 minutes!

Go back in time with local author and historian Melissa Riche. Learn how Rancho Mirage transformed from a small 1930s subdivision: ‘A Distinctive Desert Development for Discriminating People’ to the successful resort city it is today. The City of Rancho Mirage was incorporated in 1973; soon after, the Desert Sun named it ‘Country Club City,’ with thousands of homes in country club settings nearing completion or under construction, from Mission Hills to the Springs. Melissa Riche will explore the city’s growth: the successes and occasional failures along the way, from the early days to the 1970s and beyond.

There are places in the universe which hold more secrets than others—places which are apparently cut off from the rest of existence. These places may be entered; however, once inside nothing, not even light, can escape. It is by gravity that even light is prevented from escaping, and this property is what earns these places the title of black holes. Black holes are often discussed but poorly understood. Nevertheless, mankind has worked intently to peer behind the veil of the event horizon. What we have found not only bends space and time but also our understanding of how the universe works.

Gil Garcetti was a prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office for 32 years. From 1992 to 2000, he was the elected District Attorney, and supervised 1100 prosecutors, directing them to focus their efforts on combating domestic violence and initiating specific programs designed to prevent crime. He also supervised high-profile prosecutions, such as the O.J. Simpson and Mendez brothers cases, and LAPD's Ramparts Division police abuse cases.
A serendipitous photo of an ironworker working on the construction of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles led Gil Garcetti to a new career. Gaining access to the site and photographing the ironworkers' skillful and artistic work led to a book in 2002, Iron: Erecting the Walt Disney Concert Hall. His subsequent six books are all photo essays, and have led him to tell his stories in numerous photo exhibitions and presentations throughout the world.
