The rich Yamasa wrapper reminds me of the clay in the Red River that divides Texas and Oklahoma. The draw is perfect, and I very much enjoyed the first half of this spicy cigar. Final Thoughts: The Davidoff Yamasa Robusto is a cigar I didn't see coming. While Davidoff normally delivers cigars deep in the "mild" category, the Yamasa is anything but tame. In fact, in the final third, the Yamasa delivers quite a lot of flavor with tons of cedar, earthiness, and spice, and the creaminess I experienced in the first half of the cigar has all but faded away. Additionally, the Yamasa is a testament to the craftmanship Davidoff is known for. There wasn't a single burn issue, though it wasn't razor-sharp. There were no tight spots. And, the draw was perfect for the entire time. Today we continue our series of blind cigar reviews, where our goal is to provide you with a totally objective, completely neutral review of a cigar. One of the first things I noticed about the Kristoff GC Signature Series Robusto was its rustic but well-marbled wrapper. There was also a pigtail end and a closed foot – all things I often enjoy. Something that I did notice about the wrapper leaf was how much lighter it was along the stem (timestamp 2:03). Since the moisture drains from stems last, this might be an indication that this leaf was not hung to dry for long enough. After cutting the pigtail end, the draw was ok. The first flavors weren't terribly impressive and my guess was that this was a budget cigar. Even after cutting the cigar a second time, the draw was still a little tight but I could get a decent amount of smoke. The flavors were okay and a little sour with hints of wood. When it comes to cigars, is oily a good thing? And, if so, is oilier better? That's how todays' cigar, the La Flor Dominicana Cabinet No 5 Maduro Toro was described to me – “practically dripping in oil!” Visually, the LFD Cabinet #5 did appear very oily. The cigar practically shone and there was a little oily residue that remained on my fingers. That same oily United States Connecticut broadleaf maduro wrapper also gave up the aromas that were leathery and musty. While cutting the cigar was somewhat difficult, as soon as the Cabinet No 5 was lit, the aromas were fantastic and I could taste the Connecticut Broadleaf from the first puff. Through the middle of the cigar, the draw was perfect and the overall construction was really good. Regarding the flavors, there seems to be a clash between the broadleaf wrapper and the Dominican binder and fillers. Instead of a nice blending, they seem to be fighting for dominance. The wrapper seemed just a tad harsh and unrefined, and I wished that the Dominican tobaccos offered a richer molasses flavor than they did. Final Thoughts For the most part, the La Flor Dominicana Cabinet No 5 Maduro Toro I smoked was perfect. The burn was almost perfect, the draw was great, and the smoke time was worth the price. However, the flavors could've been a little better. The United States Connecticut Broadleaf totally overshadowed the Dominican tobaccos in this cigar. Perhaps, with some additional aging, this cigar could have a nice blend of flavors instead of two separate experiences fighting for dominance. This is a strong and bold cigar.
