Title: South of Heaven
Author: Jim Thompson
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Mystery
Description:
In the 1920s the worst place you could be was in that part of Texas that some people call South of Heaven, and the worst thing you could be doing there was laying a gas pipeline, along with six-hundred other hoboes, juice-heads, and jailbirds. But that's exactly what Tommy Burwell was doing, even though he wasn't smart enough to know better. Even though South of Heaven is another term for hell.Combining a tale of escalating savagery with a dead-eyed group portrait of men at the edge, Jim Thompson has produced a masterpiece of the American dissolute.

His organization of facts could hardly be better. -The Atlantic Though the events of this middle year of the Civil War have been recounted hundreds of times they have rarely been re-created with such vigor and such picturesque detail. -The New York Times Book Review The lucidity of the battle narratives the vigor of the prose the strong feeling for the men from generals to privates who did the fighting are all controlled by constant sense of how it happened and what it was all about. Title: McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales
Author: Michael Chabon
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Short Stories
Description:From Publishers WeeklyPulitzer Prize-winning novelist Chabon teams up with the editors of Dave Eggerss McSweeneys magazine to create a fiction anthology with an innovative, simple concept: the stories are driven by adventurous plots and narrative action, in contrast to the current trend toward stories that are plotless and sparkling with epiphanic dew, as Chabon writes in his introduction. The roster includes such heavyweights as Michael Crichton, Stephen King, Elmore Leonard, Nick Hornby and Harlan Ellison. As the retro title might suggest, the collection is heavy on sci-fi and detective stories, often updated with contemporary twists. Crichton offers a detective yarn called Blood Doesnt Come Out, in which a disgruntled PI takes out his frustration on his wife in a cheeky spin on the domestic violence that punctuates the pulp fiction of Jim Thompson and James A. Cain. Hornbys contribution is an entertaining sci-fi story called Otherwise Pandemonium, about a man who buys a VCR that fast-forwards into an apocalyptic future. In Rick Moodys The Albertine Notes, a debilitating drug called Albertine wreaks havoc by sending users back in time to relive their memories. Dave Eggerss Up the Mountain Coming Down Slowly is a thoughtful story in which a woman climbs Kilimanjaro to bolster her self-confidence after experiencing a personal crisis, but proves oblivious to the deaths of three porters when the weather on the mountain turns ugly. Half a dozen or so stories are markedly slight, but overall this is a strong collection. 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. Description:SUMMARY:
First volume in a dramatic and colourful new fantasy series, 'Shadows of the Apt', about the fight for survival against a menacingly regimented empire Seventeen years ago Stenwold witnessed the Wasp Empire storming the city of Myna in a brutal war of conquest. Since then he has preached vainly against this threat in his home city of Collegium, but now the Empire is on the march, with its spies and its armies everywhere, and the Lowlands lie directly in its path. All the while, Stenwold has been training youthful agents to fight the Wasp advance, and the latest recruits include his niece, Che, and his mysterious ward, Tynisa. When his home is violently attacked, he is forced to send them ahead of him and, hotly pursued, they fly by airship to Helleron, the first city in line for the latest Wasp invasion. Stenwold and Che are Beetle-kinden, one of many human races that take their powers and inspiration each from a totem insect, but he also has allies of many breeds: Mantis, Spider, Ant, with their own particular skills. Foremost is the deadly Mantis-kinden warrior, Tisamon, but other very unlikely allies also join the cause. As things go from bad to worse amid escalating dangers, Stenwold learns that the Wasps intend to use the newly completed railroad between Helleron and Collegium to launch a lightning strike into the heart of the Lowlands. Then he gathers all of his agents to force a final showdown in the engine yard . . .
