A skier slid hundreds of feet and off a 50 foot cliff during an avalanche. He survived
Anna DeBattiste. public information officer for the Summit County Rescue Group (SCRG). told CNN on Monday that the skier sustained no injuries aside from some slight bruising. DeBattiste said the incident began Saturday when a mother and son went up Loveland Pass. a point on a mountain located about 60 miles west of Denver. The ski chute they were heading to. locally known as Butt Crack. is one that the pair needed to rappel down into. A piece of their gear did not release correctly during rappelling. so they went back Sunday to retrieve it. To get to the gear. the son cut across a steep slope on the ridge. triggering an avalanche. It took him 200 to 300 feet down the mountain. including off a cliff estimated to be 50 feet high. DeBattiste said. This is what is called a terrain trap. according to DeBattiste and experts at avalanche.org a situation where a gully. trees or a cliff could make the consequences of an avalanche even worse. 'You can have a transceiver. a shovel. a probe and an avalanche air bag but if you get caught in a terrain trap then none of that stuff is going to matter.' DeBattiste said. It took the mother about 10 minutes to ski down to her son. finding him stuck waist deep in snow. DeBattiste says she is unsure who called in the avalanche whether it was the woman or a witness but the SCRG crew arrived at the scene. They were joined at the foot of...

N.Y. could lift school mask mandate in March: 6 things you need to know
STATEN ISLAND. N.Y. — After New York State announced it would lift its indoor mask mandate for businesses on Thursday. Gov. Kathy Hochul said it was possible the mask mandate for schools could end in March amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic. The state will assess coronavirus metrics in the week following the mid winter break to determine if the mask mandate for students and school staff could be lifted. Until then. masks are still required across the state at educational facilities. Here’s what you need to know. Why are masks still required in schools? Schools statewide are still requiring face coverings at least until the end of February. The regulation for masks in schools is separate from the indoor mask mandate for businesses. This is because the initial regulation for the school mask mandate was set to a 90 day window that will end on Feb. 21. What happens after mid winter break? Hochul said during a Wednesday press conference that the state will assess several metrics in the first week of March — after students return to schools following the mid winter break — to determine if the mask mandate regulation would be renewed. As part of that effort. Hochul noted the state’s efforts to distribute at home rapid test kits to every K 12 student before the mid winter break. Those numbers — along with other metrics like coronavirus cases per 100.000...

The University of Alabama is renaming a building after its first Black student. removing the name of a Klansman
(CNN)After a week of backlash. the University of Alabama System's Board of Trustees voted Friday to name a building after the school's first Black student instead of having her share the name with a Ku Klux Klan leader. The trustees reversed a February 3 decision to name the building Lucy Graves Hall after its first Black student and civil rights activist Autherine Lucy Foster and Bibb Graves. a former Alabama governor and a Ku Klux Klan leader. Students. faculty and community members cried out. saying it was wrong to recognize the legacy of these two people in one building. 'This has been a challenging time. The work group in making its recommendations certainly intended for that paired name to generate educational moments that can help us learn from our complex and rich history.' trustee emeritus Judge John England Jr. said at the special called Friday meeting. 'Somehow. the honoring of Autherine Lucy Foster sort of took the background and that's not what we wanted.' England said. 'We've heard enough from people whose opinion matter to us students. faculty. staff that we can do that in a better way than what we've done.' The working group for the board consulted with more than a dozen Alabama history scholars before suggesting the name of Lucy Graves Hall. the university system said in a news release. However. students and others on campus were not consulted. The...

Why. oh why is Biden sending Kamala Harris to stop Putin invading Ukraine?
If President Joe Biden wants to stop Russia from invading Ukraine. why on Earth would he send Vice President Kamala Harris to Europe to address the issue? Harris flew Thursday to the Munich Security Conference to work with allies to try to stop Russia’s Vladimir Putin from sending in the 150.000 troops he has encircling Ukraine. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the early stages of an invasion are already “unfolding.” But Harris has next to no diplomatic experience. beyond her (laughable) mission to address the “root causes” of the migrant flood at the southern border. The result of that? More illegal immigrants (nearly 2 million) than ever crossed the border last year. What sort of decision making is going on in the myopic White House bubble? Is this an attempt to burnish her standing on the world stage and reset her disastrous image at home? If so. it is a reckless and risky way to pursue selfish political ends. Asked tough questions. she often simply cackles. When NBC’s Lester Holt last year asked her why she hadn’t visited the border. she pleaded that she’d never been to Europe either. Well. Biden has fixed that now. Just last month. Team Biden tweeted a Harris statement blasting the United States for its racial discrimination. xenophobia. anti Semitism. Islamophobia. homophobia and transphobia. “The work to address injustice wherever it exists remains the work ahead.” she warned. Putin must be quaking in his boots. Russia’s threat to Ukraine — and broader peace — is a serious matter. and stopping it is no task for rookies. (Anyone remember the last time peace negotiators got it wrong in Munich on the eve of war?) The only thing in Harris’ favor is that she had no part in handling Biden’s last big foreign policy crisis — Afghanistan. Maybe she is the best they have to offer.

Fans furious when NBC confuses Mickey Guyton and Jhené Aiko at Super Bowl LVI: 'All Black folks don't look alike'
Super Bowl LVI took place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Calif.. on Feb. 13. with a pre show featuring a stately performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” (a hymn widely considered to be the “Black national anthem”) by Grammy winning gospel duo Mary Mary. a lilting rendition of 'America the Beautiful' by critically acclaimed alternative/soul singer songwriter and L.A. native Jhené Aiko. and the national anthem sung by breakout country star Mickey Guyton. Earlier this week. Guyton had told the New York Post. “It’s Black History Month. and a Black country singer gets to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Wow. This is a huge moment for me. It’s a huge moment for Black people. And I want to represent that in the best possible way that I can.” However. the huge moment was marred by an unfortunate flub. when Guyton was captioned incorrectly. identifying her as another woman of color. Aiko — and fans on Twitter immediately called out NBC for the egregious error. Guyton is now at the peak of her career: Last year. she became the first Black female artist to perform at the Academy of Country Music Awards. the first Black woman to host the ACM Awards ceremony. and the first Black female solo artist to be nominated in the Grammys’ country category. But the four time Grammy nominee — whose debut album is. ironically. titled Remember Her Name — battled...
