In this first installment of the Steel Mace Firefighter Series we cover how to do a 360 swing and a 300 swing (aka 10&2)
Some key points to follow-
Commit to the swing! From the rack position push the mace up to the high side and allow it to swing with speed and momentum. Do not try to muscle it.... it doesn't swing as well when you try to "control" it. Instead you want it to swing on its own and feel it pulling your arms down.
When the mace is swinging upward , right before it runs out of speed , you pull it over your shoulder with speed.

The Top Switch is a technique to move the mace from one hand to the other. Here I demonstrate it by also making and exercise with it.
Notice I start in tight to the mace head then ladder my grip out further and further from the mace head.
Once it gets to my max length I climb back down the ladder getting closer and closer to the mace head.
Great as a warm up or cool down. Excellent for grip strength. Really works well in conjuction with other low impact steel mace exercises for when you want to scale back your workout.
The demand of being on shift requires you to be primed and ready in case you have to go to work quickly. This exerciee prepares the joints and fires up those stabilizer muscles around the joints to protect them. Not a heavy exercise that will tire you out.

The Plank hold is one of the best core/abs exercises there is. Most people will overlook it because you just hold yourself in one fixed position until you are shaking like a leaf and collapse. The reason this is a great exercise is because it will seriously light up your core and it burns more calories than you think! Since you are just holding yourself up you run minimal risk of hurting yourself like you would when doing sit ups or other types of abdominal exercises.
Firefighters would do well with this exercise and they can have someone place a 45 lb plate on their back to simulate wearing their SCBA air tank. Or you can just throw your tank on and see how long you can hold yourself in position for.
