The Reserve Bank warned on Friday of rolling lockdowns across Australian states and cities continuing into next year, though it said there will be sharp economic rebounds each time the restriction ends.
RBA Governor Philip Lowe has anticipated lockdowns will be less frequent next year as vaccination rates rise.
“By the end of the year, many of us will be vaccinated, one hopes the restrictions are being eased late in this quarter and then into next quarter,” Mr Lowe said.
“As the restrictions are eased, the economy should start its recovery.”
The RBA upgraded its forecast for economic growth in 2022 from 3.5 to four per cent, however, a recession has not been ruled out, with the Governor remarking it was “unlikely at this stage”.
“I think it’s quite unlikely that we will have two-quarters of negative GDP,” he said.
